Schuetzen rifle CASE

I have a new-to-me Schuetzen rifle from Germany. I am beginning the journey.

First question: What kind of rifle case (hardside) do these fit into?!?

The important thing (besides the length) is the width. Measure from the top of the tang sight to the bottom of the lever and add a couple of inches. Will have to be at least a 2-gun case and possibly a 3.

I Use the largest Plano case available, it has wheels and will hold 2 German schuetzen rifles. I learned the hard way to remove sights & transport them in a separate case. I use a small Harbor Freight hard case for the sights, paid less than $20 for it a few years ago.

Yes, removing the sight is a good idea if it can be replaced just right after transport. Unfortunately, that is why so many schuetzens are found with no sights. They were stored separately and there comes a day when the rifles get sold and the sights are orphaned still in another box in the corner. If the case is large enough and padded enough and the rifle is put in the case with the sights on the up (handle side) then there is no danger of the weight of the rifle resting on the sight on the bottom side of the case.

I make fitted cases for all my competition rifles.   Store-bought cases can seldom accommodate the German-style rifles.   In a fitted case, one can have secure  protection and ample room to carry all the paraphernalia for a given rifle.   Bullet seater, sights, tools, etc.

Anybody with a table-saw can knock out a pretty good case.  I use wool cloth for linings (go to Good-Will Store and buy a lady's winter coat for a few dollars), and glue canvas to the outside, then treat it with urethane varnish for a durable covering.   Don't use the pretty brass corners on the outside -- they will eat up your floors.  Also check out the Good-Will for brief-cases -- they often have useful handles and hinges.

A further advantage is that, unlike plastic cases, the rifles can be stored in the case without fear of corrosion.

I'm using 52 inch soft cases. They work better than hard cases in the trunk of my car.

This older posting (below) of mine is another option -- it's a soft case, but not a 'light duty' one for sure.  You get plenty of protection for the rifle, and sights, without it being a bulk hard case.

Instead, it's a "rather large bulky SOFT case", but it works well for me.

Old No7

I went looking for a "soft" but heavy-duty case for a new-to-me Schuetzen rifle. I already have a Plano hard case that I've used for years for my 38-55 High Wall, but I didn't want another hard case.

I found this one -- Cabela's Xtreme Long-Range Rifle Case -- at the local Cabela's (obviously...) and it is rated "5 out of 5" after a bunch of ratings.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The internal length dimension of 50.5" is exactly the length of my Schuetzen and it just fits inside. There is a small pocket inside to hold the muzzle and 2 Velcro straps to secure the barrel and the butt. With the 12" max height inside, there's plenty of room for the large hooked & carved buttstock of mine, and the 3" inside width also helps the wide stock -- with its exaggerated cheek piece -- fit inside very well.

It wasn't cheap -- but cost lots less than the rifle, and it will protect it very well. The extra pockets will easily hold the rear sight disc (as it has a large 2.5" disc on mine) and the watch-keys needed to mount & adjust the sight.

I live in Idaho too and believe it or not we got some interstate highways here.  Have to drive seventy miles to get to one but the old Lincoln land yacht gets me there smooth and safe. I can pack a lot or rifles in the trunk in soft cases.
Finding cases long enough is the bugger. I'm using Allen 52 inch soft cases with three zippered compartments on the side. Working out real well. A Schuetzen rifle with 32 inch barrel and pronged butt plate fit just fine.

I also have a couple old original canvas cases made just for German style Schuetzen rifles. The padded Allen cases are better affording protection but I use the canvas cases anyway. My rifles are just old used target rifles.

Sounds like you live in a low rent district, Rich.  Grin Tongue Lips Sealed

You might also try Unique Cases (UniqueCases.com).  They sell nice long ballistic nylon cases, nicely padded for the North-South Skirmish Association trade.  I have a 58 inch model for my Zouave musket.  They have factories in WV & PA as I understand it, and in addition to N-SSA events they set up at several mid-Atlantic gun shows.
