	out of black, need a smokeless 100 yd. target load. have a #5 pacific 30 in. barrel. relined by Ron Long with 8 grove liner. slugs .406 using 300 csa at 1-20 sized .408 have 4759, 4198, 4227, unique & a host of others. have a local match in 2 weeks. any help from you Ballard guys that shoots smokeless. I would be very thankful. thanks in advance. old slowshot. forgot to add cal. . it is 40-65.

	I shoot a 40-63 a bit with 326 gr bullets and use 4227 at a charge between 20 and 21 grains with pretty fair success. Regards, Joe

	I see quite a few loads in the 4th edition of Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook for a 40-65 Winchester. Looks like 22 grains of 4759 or 4198 would be a place to start. I have used 20 grains of 4227 in several 40 caliber rifles but have no idea what pressures they are. I use #9 in my Ballard but the 40-85 case is quite large compared to a 40-65 so have no idea there. Tom

	I use 20 grains 4227 under a 400 grain bullet in my Ruger and Winchester 1885 rifle. I think it's to hot for a Ballard. I'd start at 16 grains and work up.

	I’d stay with black powder for the Ballard. Nothing gained with smokeless and the potential dangers.

	Back Creek in Winchester, VA has Swiss for around 28 bucks a can in 25lb. lots delivered.

	I've found 4759 to give better results in 38 caliber and larger. Start at 18 gr. and work up to 20 gr. in the 40

	Good luck finding 4759 if you don’t already have a supply. It’s been discontinued for about a decade. If I hadn’t squirreled away 10# or so back in the day I wouldn’t frustrate myself trying to find it for load development then run out again. Froggie

	pinwheel. I have 2 cans of 4759,will try it next week. have a match tomorrow, will have to use my 44 1/2 in 38-55. little milder than 40-65 anyway. what powder will be a good replacement for 4759. thanks slowshot.
