Trimming Starline 38-55 Long Brass
May 2nd, 2022 at 1:21pm
Print Post
I am reloading for a 1904 vintage 1894 Winchester 38-55 lever gun and it has been suggested this Starline brass would work better in this gun.

As these are obviously longer than normal does anyone have any suggestion as to how I would correctly trim them and make sure I maintain the longer length.

The only option I have discovered so far is Lee Precision will make me a custom Quick Trim Die.

Thanks, Retreever

I have a 1906 vintage, model 1894 Winchester lever gun. I'm using the longer Starline brass in it - works fine, never trimmed it (yet anyway).

If the fired cases will accept a bullet, you are OK as far as the length is concerned.

For cases that I don't have a LE Wilson shellholder for I use my old Lyman case trimmer upgraded over the years with a carbide cutter and a drill attachment for the crank.  Tom

Starline makes 2 sets of 38-55 brass.  The "short" brass is 2.080" long for use reloading 38-55 Win cartridge.  The "long" brass is 2.125" long for use reloading the 38-55 Ballard cartridge.

hmmmmmmmmmm, when I asked a gentleman from Starline one year at the SHOT Show he said the bean counters at WW had begun to shorten the brass for the 30-30 family of cartridges to save 1/1000th of a penny per case.  These days I would believe that.

I agree.
I've not found any difference in accuracy in a lever gun with brass length and 38-55. In fact most of my brass is made from 30-30 because I lose them often enough.

If I hear another  millenial use the term "node" or "optimal " at the range I'll scream!!!
