	are there any records that note whether a rebated action is specific to a model number? I have an non-engraved Axel Petersen barreled rifle, straight grip, DST. Two line address, SN:282XX. I also have one that Jim Feren won at Coors. It is a pistol grip, single trigger action. Profusely engraved, but obviously a custom. It is a rebated action, SN: 59XX. Also a two line address. I have Dutchers' book, but I have not found any data as to which is which, and when. thanks, Rich

	I am not sure of the question? but the Peterson is most likely a Pacific, and the prize rifle, given that Ron Long had a hand in it, and and is original except for the engraving, more than likely a Union Hill. The engraving possibly by Roger Ronnie sp. Lots of if's, but good guesses. I am also pretty sure the answers are in John Dutchers book, if there are answers. Keep digging, and good luck. I did talk to John regarding Peterson barrel stamps. He is aware of three. Krag

	Thanks. Now for my next question: there seem to be about six manufacturers of Ballards, not counting Red Willow, and the gentlemen at Cody. Did each company have their own separate serial numbering sytem; starting with "1"? Now I know why some love HWs, you can track Winchester numbers pretty easily. Rich

	ISS Again, I would consult John Dutchers book. I am not sure if he addressed that in his book, but I know he has amassed an incredible collection of numbers, in the many thousands, early to late from Marlin Firearms back. If you attend the Colorado Gun Collectors show in a few weeks, John will be there, and is very cordial, and would attempt to answer any questions I am sure. If you will not be there, I will try to remember to ask him. Krag

	If its non rebated it was most likely a #6. The other models that were non rebated were the #10 and < i believe, the Montana . 40 Rod

	My #10 Junior is not rebated as 40Rod said and the one Montana a friend had was not rebated. I think the early 0, 1 and some #2s were not rebated.

	My thoughts on a number nine Union Hill as a candidate for the prize rifle is not, as the serial number is too low. My suggestions were based on their commonality. The prize rifle could even be a No 2, or an early pistol grip Rigby, although not likely. Just about anything is possible with these old rifles, and even more so when not complete or altered, and or customized, especially one as talented as the late Ron Long.

	I have read Dutcher's book four times. I have not yet found a listing of serial numbers by manufacturers or where each would have started numbering their output. I found a reference to the Marlin numbers, but a note that the total between all of them totals about 37,000. Rich

	ISS I didn't make reference to the collection of numbers being in his book, only that he compiled a list.

	I did find out that each manufacturer apparently (I say apparently) started off with SN:1. My Coors prize rifle is rebated, and has serial number 59XX. Two line address, and is a J M Marlin.

	Marlin Ballard serial # 13 was for sale at the ISSA shoot at Raton a few years ago. Cheers, Laurie
