Morning coffee with a buck

Hello all,
Yes it's Fallow deer season again in Oz and I headed out with a few friends to our hut in the hills. Plenty of stags were croaking & leading us a merry chase. After an early morning hike up a steep slope & down the other side I sat down on a log in a quiet gully to enjoy a hot cup of coffee. No sooner had I taken a sip when a young buck ambled into view about 75 yds away and stopped looking straight at me. As I dropped the cup & grabbed the Ruger .303 he exited left rapidly. He went about 20 yds & then decided to stop and have another look....that was a big mistake that young deer often make.
I didn't get my coffee after all but that buck was reward enough after a hard walk. He had a small set of wonky antlers so taking him out of the gene pool was a positive too & the venison was delicious.

Does that mean that it's the kind of deer that will fallow you anywhere?

LOL! I wish!

Boomer, Fallow are probably about the same size as your Whitetail deer. The buck pictured was of the darker type but usually they are a much lighter colour with distinctive spots. I also got a spiker of that colour. We've had a wet summer here (for a change) so there is plenty of food in the bush and the deer are in top condition with a thick layer of fat. We roasted a hindquarter in camp and it was great eating.

For those of you in the US, not Oz, and are curious, Fallow deer have been introduced into this country.  If you are very lucky, you can see them from US 101 in Mendocino County, California.  Probably other places, but the deer have been in Mendo for 100 years or longer.

Some chap with a lot of $$, land, and a big ego.  IIRC, there was a 600-Yard Club on the place.  Not sporting to take a shot at less than 600 yards.

I've seen a few in Mendocino. There was at one time a population in the Santa Cruz Mtns (Mt Madonna area) above Watsonville.
