I was on the bench to the left of Gabi’s when she shot that 250.  Joe started out coaching her saying things like “don’t close the lever too fast” and watch that sensitive trigger”. After the first few shots he stopped talking.  When she was done se asked if she did OK. She beat all the boyz that day!!

At Spokane one year I was watching her shoot OH. She never touches the trigger when aiming but rests her finger on the lever. Then moves it up to the trigger to fire the shot. She kept her shots in the red.  Told her she should have her finger on the trigger when aiming. She said she was scared to. She's busy raising children now so no shooting.

I would be more than pleased to use one in brass on a current build offhand single shot rifle. Right at home to my eye. Form following function.

rkba2nd,
This was Charles C Johnson's prototype that he had on his personal position Ballard circa 1932. The production units were cast aluminum. He also made palm rests. Around 1933 the NRA banned palm rests and hook buttplates citing the fact that those who could afford such items could buy an advantage over those who could not.
It is beautiful work. This rule was eliminated after WW2.

Grumpy grumpy,
The push button on the bottom cams the pin back when depressed to allow adjustment.

Looks like a prime candidate for a small lot cast in brass…..

Thanks for that fine contribution to the discussion, Jerry.  I fear I’ve neglected my own thread for a couple of weeks due to participation in the N-SSA Spring Nationals.  I’m back now!

Your grandfather’s design strikes me as much more elegant and svelte than the later Freeland’s units.  For one thing, everything is much more compact and would require less wood be cut off the stock’s butt while fitting.  Also, the button and lock pin method of adjustment is far superior to the later method that requires a screwdriver or Allen wrench to adjust.

Once again Charley’s genius is obvious for all to see.  Smiley

Froggie,
The one down side to the adjustment method is that is not infinitely adjustable, having watched current international smallbore shooters, the precise adjustment of the rifle and attachments to fit the shooter in  each position is vital to individual success.

Funny you should say that.  I was taught (way, way back then) that it was imperative to discover a gun's idiosyncrasies and to adjust them if you could or yourself if you couldn't.  Maybe that's why I've never shot even close to a 250.
