Accuracy Improvement After Crowning - 1/2 MOA

I posted not too long ago in the gunsmith section saying how I was having accuracy issues and saw that I had nicks in my sharp crown. Here are the accuracy results after I removed the barrel and recrowned/chamfered the muzzle.

These results were shot at 200 yards off the bench using a 20x scope. These results are showing that I have darn near 1/2 MOA of accuracy with two different bullets. This would be shots within a 1" diameter circle.

I've also included a pic of the lube star on the muzzle which now shows a symmetrical shape. In my old post you can somewhat see the shadow of it not being symmetrical and kind of smudged at 6 oclock where I had the nicks.

Maybe I'll do a bit better now during competitions! Smiley No magic bullet here but lots of various things that were tweaked for the hoped for good results. Wink

Congrats on the success. Crowning is an important and often overlooked item. At least half of the Browning BAR’s that came into my shop for accuracy issues were dramatically improved with a proper re-crown. I almost felt  guilty taking the payment. They thought I worked some kind of magic.

I would say you now have no excuses for missed shots.  Would take all the fun out of it for me, as I like to blame the gun, the load, conditions, etc.  It is never my poor performance! Great groups.  Oldwyo

Wow and Congratulations my friend and your Lube Star looks outstanding to my own eyes.
I would assume you might of had to move the face of the muzzle back and if so just how much did you actually have to set it back.
Your workmanship is also at an extremely high personal standard and one that also needs to be appreciated and I surely do.

Thanks for the compliments John!

I removed about 0.030" off the face of the muzzle before it looked like I cleaned up all the nicks. I did the light chamfer after that and did not use fine grit paper or anything else touch it.

I really just take it slow with things and am real patient in getting things lined up the way I want them. I also practice on scrap before I attempt the real thing. I'm self taught and still learning. I try and get as much advice as possible and then I weigh and choose what I think will give the best results.

For redoing the chamfer on my Hepburn I think I might try what others have suggested, i.e., the chamfer cutting tools. I think the type that utilizes a tight fitting reamer pilot would be best. If I don't see an improvement I can always remove the barrel and cut it in the lathe. Tongue

Yes, I can finally get back to blaming myself instead of everything else that I could think of! I can now focus on what the conditions are doing to me and try and out smart them, or so I hope to. Cheesy

Well done. I, too, have seen improvement(s) with a new crown on several rifles.
It's the little things.
