Dies yes and brass a yes there was an Article Published in a past ASSRA Single Shot Journal on what to use and how to go about it. Unfortunately it is just about as hard to get as is the 28-30 brass itself and you can request to get a copy from the ASSRA's Archives

A word about dies.  I have a CH4D set, and while the FL die and the seater work well, the expander is worse than useless.  The mandrel is both too small and too short. The case is so long that it cocks off center as the mandrel enters, and the mouth gets distorted beyond use. And it was sized assuming you would be shooting jacketed bullets - much too small for cast. I made up a proper expander that uses the so-called Lee Universal Expanded die body.  Drawing available.

The parent brass if you want to try reforming is 5.6(?) x 63, and I have a little.  It waren't cheap, but I now have enough original brass that I could let some go.  Assuming I can find it!  Haven't laid eyes on it for 2-3 years now.

The brass can be ordered from Rocky Mountain Cartridge in either small or large rifle primers.
Ebay currently has a three die set of CH4D 28-30 dies for sale that ends in two days, rarely see these dies for sale.
Bertram has made 28-30 brass but its a basic that needs to be run through a sizing die and trimmed to length.

Thanks to all.  I have a call into RMC, just waiting for the call back.

Sounds like CH4D dies have an issue.  Obviously I will be shooting cast.

Any thoughts on how big a PITA it would be to have a proper mandrel made?

Rich

You don't, I take it, have a lathe or access to one?

M die has the same problem - the mandrels are too short.  Not hard to make a long one if a lathe is available.

Can you still get Bertram brass?  It's ugly.  It must be annealed before you do anything else to it.  But I bought 40 cases several years ago.  36 survived annealing & a run into my C-H dies (which are 100 % OK).  Since then, I've lost one Bertram case.  35 is enough.  I'm breech seating.

I have a box of RMC cases.  The hole in the primer pocket is too small for any decapping pin.  Never used them.

I still have a dozen or so original cases, and use them.  Biggest problem has been deformation of the rims over time.  I use the bad ones as plugged cases.

In my Stevens, I don't resize unless the case won't go into the chamber.  I was afraid I'd lose Bertram cases, so I annealed and sized all of them before they ever went near my rifle.

Not well.   Been there already.

The expander I made is on the left.  It has a very long entry to straighten the case up before it gets to the actual expander diameter.

Worth knowing that Stevens chambers were very tight, and the reamer that CPA is using likewise.  The fellow I made those tools for was trying to use a .287 cast bullet, and in every kind of brass, including RCC, a loaded round would not chamber at all.  I'm sizing my bullets .2845 for both my original Stevens barrels.  (Made the sizer die myself also.)

The wife’s 044 1/2 is a 28-30. Bought 40 rounds of Bertrand 30 years ago Borrowed a sizing die from Paul at CPA. Annealed, sized, never lost a case, she breach seats, still have 40 cases. The Bertrand rims very in diameter somewhat.

If you have a Stevens, just breech-seat with a plugged case.  Lots of problems just go away.

I use RMC brass, I haven’t noticed a problem with the primer flash holes in my brass. I use an ideal #3 tong tool with the original decapping pin to de-cap and prime, and a 7 mm Mauser die to seat and lightly crimp the bullet. I use 4227 and an Ideal 285221 120 grain bullet mold. A 28-30 is pleasant to shoot and has a distinct report when you fire it. One of my favorite calibers.

With fired brass and with bullets sized to .285, I do not need to expand the case neck to seat the bullet. Maybe I am lucky I guess.
