If it is drilled and tapped correctly with the proper spacing it should not harm its value.

i have a beautiful jersey city pope ballard #6 that was not d&t. i will not , but i have talked to couple of friends that said they epoxy the blocks to the barrel. it holds and if you want to remove them just a small wack with a brass punch and they're off , a little clean up and no damage to the blue. tony<><

Ron Longs work is second to none, but it is also what might be considered to be modern made rifle. I personally do not see how it could have any ill effects on its current value but just the opposite but that's just me.

Unless Ron Long is known to have never D&T a barrel, is it really an issue.

Hang it over the fireplace. Or make a lamp out of it with a Miller Lite lamp shade.

Rich, here's something to chew on that may help make your decision whether to D&T that Miller barrel for scope mounts. During the time period that prize rifle was awarded, many (probably most) of the top shooters were switching from externally adjusted scopes (Unertl & Lyman) to internals. As the mounts are quite different from each other, the winner of that rifle could have it D&T'ed to his preference (or not).

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

true, that...

I found a plain but identical rifle in WA for $2700.  It is already D&T, so I will leave the Coors rifle alone for now.

I'm not familiar with the rifle in question but I'd have to ask myself what has more value, the opportunity to shoot the gun with a scope or its market value as a unmolested piece?  If the former then go for it.  If the latter then leave it alone.  However, the former will be forever and the urge to see what it would do as a scoped gun may be momentarily.  And the world is full of accurate guns waiting to be found.  So I guess you can see what side of the issue I'm coming down on here.  Best of luck.

It is something of a White Elephant... but at least it doesn't have to be fed.
I've have a few Safe Queens, but nothing in that league. Sold them to buy several good shooters for each.

cbashooter's comment about marrying a virgin and keeping her that way is the best analogy I've ever read. Kudos!

Send the rifle, blocks and screws to me. I'll drill and tap it for you.

Have you considered glueing the blocks on?

Here is a Canadian glue on deviation with safety wires.
