Hey Hy

I'm wondering what is the population of
these early Small Frame (Favorite) rifles .

Seems as if there is a few collectors/shooters
who have ''Had'' one only way back in history.

Any one that has one or knows some one
who does , join in.

thnkz in advance... skwerl

Regarding the larger sideplate rifles, John Dutcher wrote an article in Gun Report (Vol. 37, #9, Feb 1992, page 16-30) where he states "Initially, the new solid frame 1894 Ideal rifles used the same model numbers as the side plate series (107, 108, 109, and 110)."   According to Flayderman's Guide, the model number on all but the very early ones was stamped on the bottom flat of the barrel under the forearm.  Can anyone verify that?

I’m not sure where this comes in early vs late, my 107 has only the serial on the tang, no markings on the face of the receiver.

The barrel as described above. Serial number 2236, underside of the barrel in front of the forearm, 107 and the original caliber, not the cartridge, 22, under the forearm.

It was discussed in this thread a couple years ago. Another member posted a photo of a rifle in the 2900 range that was marked on the receiver face.

I have a sideplate Favorite in .25 Stevens.  Even has a pretty good bore.  Spent years trying to get one.  Nice little rifle. It will be one of the testbeds for the reloadable .25 Stevens brass project.

Grant shows one in the original box labelled Favorite in one of his books.

I have three of the earliest solid frame 44-size rifles, but I don't recall seeing the model number on the barrels. Pretty sure only one still has its' original barrel anyway.  I'll have to look more closely at that one.

I have one in .22LR.  Steel buttplate, round barrel.  It’s way at the back of the safe, but IIRC, it has the J. Stevens A&T logo and the 1885 patent date on the barrel.  Serial number in tiny numbers on the front of the receiver, in the 9XX range.

I have three small and one large sideplate versions.  Only 2 small ones have original barrels and there is no sign of a model number on either of those.  The serial numbers are, but that is all.  The last one I picked up has the different version of a link that was mentioned in DeHaas'books.  It also has the lever that rides up and supports the breechblock.  The attached pictures show how it works.

Believe that rifle is made to the Horr patent which Stevens purchased and later modified.
Looks stronger than the later Favorites and 44's

I have a small frame .25 RF and a large frame .22 that has been barreled. No model number on either. Had them for a long time and paid more than I thought I should of at the time. Hardly eve see one now. Guess I didn't pay too much after all.
