Model 54 Stevens and False Muzzle

Stevens introduced this model in 1897 and as can be seen it was supplied with a false muzzle. Remember, Pope didn't come to Stevens until 1901. Stevens offered them up to about 1902. Most collectors have never seen a Stevens barrel made by them for a false muzzle.

That's very interesting, especially because "can be" suggests a thing is optional while "will be" suggests it isn't.  That being said, I've only seen a handful of Model 54s, but none had a factory false muzzle or were drilled for one.

Actually have seen two 54s with false muzzles, one in .25-21 that went through a Morphy auction of Francis Brown's collection and one I have in .32-40. Oddly my 54 doesn't have the heavy Schuetzen action. I know of two more f/m rifles in a Tenn. collection.

I once had a 44 1/2 Model 49 in .32-40 with Stevens-marked barrel equipped with "Pope-style" false muzzle, bullet starter, and rifling, but RH twist.  Maybe by Ross after Pope left?  Anyway, I was unsuccessful getting any accuracy with breech-seated bullets.  Granted my loading abilities were not very refined, but eventually discovered a loose spot near the muzzle.  Wish I had taken some photos.
