The Second Journey

Since I made too many mistakes the first time around I am starting over. Hopefully I will be able to use some of the original parts. If I measure right I should be able to use the original lever.
Set up in mill ready to start milling out the breech block cavity.

Thanks for sharing Wayne! Looking forward to this journey...
Did you start with 4140 again this time around?
Cheers!

Yes, 4140. Seems the easiest to work with. This is annealed so only B90 hard.

Top of pocket roughed out. Next step will be sawing off the excess on the bottom of the receiver and sanding to shape.

Surprise, surprise. The holes came out exactly where they were supposed to. Relief.

A little more work on the breechblock pocket. Within a few thousandths of finish size. New end mills should be here Tuesday. Next step will be boring and threading the barrel tenon.

You seem to have 'bounced back' rather well and are moving with good speed. Most encouraging!

Looking good Wayne... You are having entirely too much FUN!!

Did you bore & thread for the barrel on the lathe or in the mill?

Had to thread in the lathe. I don't have a threading attachment for the mill. Had a whole lot of fun getting it in the lathe right. I'm almost back to where I was 8 days ago. I may have to make a new breech block. Will try salvaging the old one first. Quite a bit of machining left at the back of the receiver.

I made a delrin version of a lechner about 10 years ago. I finally got up enough nerve to try making one in steel. This is a striker action so a lot simpler to make than a copy of a low or high wall winchester. I am no longer capable of shooting off-hand so will probably just  shoot it off bags. To some this may be a let down but I will be able to say I made it and it works.
