A Big Day

Today was a very big day for me. It was my first 200yd target with my Stevens #10 Tip-Up. I spent a LOT of time with this rifle two years ago at 100yds. working up loads and bench techniques. I could(pretty consistently) get well under 1moa. Today, I shot a half a dozen 100yd “warm-up” shots and was spot on at 100. This load chrono’d 1288 at the muzzle. It took 4 shots to get on the paper at 200. I was a little surprised that it was nearly 20” low at 200! When I started shooting for group, the very first 3 shots were the ones in the green! I couldn’t believe my eyes….man was I getting excited! Both the high shots were poor bench technique on my part. This target is the culmination of 49 years of wanting to shoot Schuetzen. It’s a good day in the Northwoods!

I have a tip up in 38 Centerfire in beautiful mechanical shape but a sewer bore.
Is a rebore to 38-55 pushing the action.
Your results are encouraging me..

With the pics you guys post, I’d have never thought I would be the enabler Smiley. 

The journey with this particular Tip-Up has been both rewarding and very frustrating. My notes show that I am just shy of 900 shots on target to get where I am at 100yds. Looks like it might take even more at the new to me 200 yard game. If anyone does head down this rabbit hole, I did stumble onto a few “game-changers”. One was resting the trigger guard loop on a wood riser and sheet cork as my rear “bag”. The Tip-Up might just possibly have the worst rifle design of any for benchrest. The other game changer was a VERY light tap on the barrel lock with a soft copper bar as part of my loading sequence. Say what you want, these rifles were made to be snapped shut. A wimpy action close puts holes all over the paper. My notes show groups shrinking considerably after doing this. I’m sure I’ve posted some of these targets before, but here are some of my last targets the winter before last. All at 100 yds.

As a point of reference, the black bull is 2 3/8” and the green dot 3/4”.

It is an Accurate 31-156C & CB. I designed this tapered bullet starting with the 31-125M. I added another band and tapered the bullet from .308” bore on the nose to .314” on the 2 base bands. The CB version is simply 31-156C with a .020” base bevel. This bullet shoots a little better. On the right is the mold you made me. I will be casting in a few days and am REALLY anxious to try this bullet.

The Maynard, Stevens, Wesson, and Wurfflein were the most popular, relatively speaking, tip-ups in their day.  Of those, the Stevens was in my opinion easily the weakest design and most apt to shoot loose.  Thus the most "potent" factory-chambered centerfire calibers were the .44-40 and 32-35.  So, even if the action were good and tight, I'd not chamber a Stevens tip-up in .38-55, if for no other reason than who knows how "hot" a future owner might load his cartridges.

I did a lot of shooting today with alternate powders at 200yds. Many groups were paper plate size. A few 4-5”. With my last 6 bullets, I went back to what the rifle keeps telling me to shoot….4759 (I’ve been told that I don’t listen well) I made one scope adjustment up and shot this 200yd group from Old #10. I was thrilled. High of 6deg today. I opened up the canopy around the 200yd target for more light. That was a big help.

Nice shooting, the targets show the bullets entering with a little yaw. Might increase the powder a small amount to see what happens. Group could be smaller yet!
