I am looking at buying a Pope Stevens rifle.  How do I tell if it is one he made while at Stevens, or one he made in his own shop?

SN:659

thanks,

Rich

The top flat of the bbl should be marked "Stevens-Pope".  If so, Pope usually marked his bbls
under the fore end with "P" and the serial number.  While at Stevens he rifled and marked approx. ~1200 barrels.

Thanks.  Unfortunately, rifle is not available for inspection yet.  Internet deal cooking.

A phone call with Tom is very informative, as well as entertaining.  I enjoyed the hour or so we spent the other evening.  I called him about 9:55 pm MST, and he tells me "you got 5 minutes, talk fast...".  An hour later, he is still giving me advice on what to look for in a true Pope-Stevens from the Stevens factory VS a Stevens that Pope barrelled at some other point in time.

Next payday, I will just endorse the check and mail it to him.  Make that next two or three...

Great Gentleman to visit with.
