Pope Model (Special) in .22 short with a Ross pattern butt stock. This style was made to support the face better when using a scope. They are very early found. The .22 short was the gallery cartridge of choice around 1900 when targets were shot at 75 feet.

Very nice rifle. To me this Ross looks very similar to the Schoyen/ Peterson perch belly stocks. This is my left handed stock by Schoyen/Peterson. Not sure which one made it, but I would presume their stocks would precede Ross’s time frame although Pope would have been in the same times. They are, however, very comfortable to shoot offhand with scoped rifles.
Later thoughts, Ross worked at Stevens and carried on after Pope left in 1906 which you all Steven’s experts already know! For some reason I was thinking of Ross King who Michael Petrov spoke about in his book. So all of these guys were contemporaries, wonder if one might have copied another’s?
