Need Help Building a Rifle

I’m relatively new to single shot rifles and am looking for suggestions regarding, barrel contours, barrel weights, and the pros and cons of a CPA vs C. Sharps.  I currently shoot .22 bpcr with a Winchester/Miroku with 10x MVA scope, but plan to start shooting rimfire Schutzen offhand.
I’d prefer a half-round/half-octagon barrel and would like the rifle without scope to weigh between 91/2-10lbs. with a 24-26” barrel. I need help determining what barrel contour and weight will get me there.
Everyone here seems to be very pleased with their CPA rifles. I’ve read comments about C. Sharps having periodic lapses in quality. Your suggestions would be appreciated, Tom

CPA builds great rifles, I have two for competition. I have never enjoyed shooting a rifle as much as these two at a range practice session or a match.

Each rifle has a .32-20 CPA barrel (Shilen and Ron Smith) and a .25-20 WCF barrel (Shilen and Krieger). All barrels are 28 inch with minimal taper and with a benchrest forearm.  One Silhouette stock and one Benchrest stock. Both shoot better than I can.

I have them set up for both external and internal adjustment scopes so I can shoot a variety of ASSRA Traditional and CBA Plain-base matches.

CPA stands behind their rifles for warranty. This is my litmus test.

100% what Bud Hyett said.  I am having a 2 barrel set built at CPA.  A 32-20 CPS (32-20 necked up slightly necked up to take the .323" bullets).  The other barrel is in 22 rimfire.  The CPA is unique in that you can unscrew a barrel in about a minute, and screw a different one one.  With the 22 rimfire, you also switch out the centerfire breechblock and switch the rimfire breechblock in its' place.  Lets you shoot every class at a match, or practice your shooting with the 22 shell.

When I was looking for a .22 a guy where I shoot BPCR silhouette had a .22 C Sharps that he wanted to sell, told him  to bring it next month, good price, all set up ,BUT, he brought an 1/8 wood dowel rod that he had to use to get some shells out. So Pass.
Bought a CPA silhouette set up the way I wanted and first time out shot a 36 ,got all the prone targets and 6 chickens. Well worth the money.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I was leaning toward buying a CPA, but wanted to make sure.

What barrel size would you suggest to meet the 91/2-10lb weight with a 24-26” length? I’d like the rifle to look proportionate, i.e., not have a short fat or pencil thin barrel.  Thanks again, Tom

I'd talk directly to Gail. She's a very competitive competitor which gives her the experience to be well versed in requirements.

Send her an email through the website with your thoughts. You can then set up a time for a phone call if needed.

+++ on CPA and Gail can answer all your questions.

I have been shooting mine now for six years.  I have a 38-55 and .22 RF set up.

Last year (2021) I had one put together for my wife for when she retired.  On hers, I did everything at once; 38-55 and .22 RF barrels and blocks; palm rest; checkering; Soule sights; 8X DZ Arms scope; fancy wood.  Best way to go; no need to send it back for this and that.

Now we can compete in a variety of matches together.

The interchangeable barrel/caliber feature of the CPA Stevens is tough to beat.

Mike.

I have had my CPA since 1998 and have won numerous honors with it. If anything breaks it is also replaced for free and it is also very easy to work on. Without having to send it back for anything.

What type of shooting are you going to use your new rifle for? You state you shoot 22BPCR. Is your plan to shoot either/both BPCR/BPTR? If so, you'll want a different configuration than one set up for a small CF cartridge for Schuetzen. Tell us more.

That said, while I'm currently a CPA shooter I was previously a C. Sharps High Wall shooter and would not hesitate to use one again. Both excellent rifles and can't go wrong with either. Excellent, high quality rifles from both companies.

I went through this with Gail a couple years ago helping get a rifle for my father in law.

There is more to it than just barrel contour. Stock style can make a huge difference in weight. As will butt plate. I think she came within about 4 ounces of predicting the finished weight.

Most likely you will not be the first person to do what you are planning and she will have a good idea of where to start.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions.  I contacted Gail and went over my “wish list” and how I will be using the rifle. She walked me through the pros and cons, and I ordered a rifle.  Now the wait begins.  Thanks, Tom  Smiley
