Hey y'all. New here. I'm originally from middle Tennessee and live in Central Maryland, now. I've been a fan of single shots moat all if my life. My collection - such as it is - is a little small compared to what some of y'all probably have, but I have a ball with it. I'm working my way toward refining into a small but good quality collection that I use often, rather than several things that are fair and/or go unused.

I've got a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in .45-70  andtheir silhouette configuration with the pistol grip stocka and a 30" barrel. My best rifle is a CPA Silhouette in .40-65, and I'm seriously looking at getting a .22lr barrel for it to shoot 200yds. I'm (very slowly) trying to get set up for BPCR Silhouette matches. I also have a Walnut Hill 418 in .22lr that I found a couple years ago. It looks like it's practically new.

My main shooting interest is probably in flintlocks, which are the original single shot rifles anyway, and I've recently started an interest in SxS doubles. Just thought I'd offer up a little background. Looking forward to learning a lot here.

Welcome to the group. I'm a newbie myself. Just wanted to relate a curious incident at the Rifle Frolic at Kings Mountain many years ago. I observed a pilgrim firing his flint gun in the relay before mine. Amigo, when his cock fell, that rifle FIRED. NO delay. NONE. Jeez. I naturally sauntered over when he came off the line and inquired what lock he had and had he had it timed, tuned, etc. NOPE. It was a $25 Dixie Gun Works lock. He had built the rifle himself. Looked just like everybody else's. Never forget that rifle.

Some of those locks are hit and miss, but many work just fine. If you've shot at those kind of events, I imagine you know you're way around a flintlock. But my experience has been that most problems with a poorly functioning flinter are either poor design (like a touch hole in the wrong place) or a shooter not really experienced with that particular rifle. They all have their little quirks, but if you get those figured out, most shoot just fine.

But yeah, sometimes you just see one that's special.

Just saw your reply. I do know flint guns, actually. My post concerned the rare gun that fires instantly, not ignition problems. Aside from the screw-in vents that are counter-bored from the inside, about all you can really do to speed up ignition is to heat and bend the cock to lower the impact on the frizzen. Done right, the spark shower falls faster with less impact on the frizzen. A roller bearing riding on the frizzen spring helps, too. Experimenting with sole plates of different Brinnel hardnesses might help, also. I failed to mention during another relay the same day a mama bird (can't remember, but a quail undoubtedly) led her five or six chicks across the range( maybe fifteen firing points) as unconcerned and blase as could be. Not one shooter fired. Another unforgettable memory, unfortunately  before camera phones.

Forgot to mention, they crossed about 25 yards downrange. A sublime sight.
