General Wade Hampton’s hunting trophy

I thought some of you might enjoy this.
The strange journey of confederate cavalry general, two term South Carolina governor Wade Hampton’s hunting trophy. I purchased this trophy in a UK online auction about 10 years ago. How they ended up in the UK will probably remain a mystery. They were advertised as bear teeth, Wade Hampton was a noted bear & cougar hunter, even dispatching some with a knife. This decorative waist coat button is dated February 5, 1867, Wildwood was a large plantation owned by the Hampton family.
Thanks Mike

That is so doggone cool! I named my son Wade because Hampton was such an interesting, influential man and a leader for his whole lifetime. I like to think my boy grew up a bit like his namesake.
I hope you don't mind if I copy these and send him the file so he can see these too.
Thanks and have a Happy New Year.   Smiley

Very cool piece . I read a book on Wade Hampton when I was in elementary school and have been a fan every since . Several of the Hamptons used knifes to kill bears and boars . He and his sons were very tall and large men for their time and by all descriptions were fearless to the extreme . Congratulations on that find , I am officially jealous .
