case filler

Owing to a shortage of BP here at the moment I have been forced to try smokeless just to be able to continue shooting.
A friend suggested a load of AR2207 which I happened to have on hand. The load I used was 24gr then a paper wad over the powder and the case filled up to within 1/4" of the rim with semolina followed by a LDPE wad and then the bullet ( 400 gr money bullet ) The load was compressed about 3/16" and the case mouth given a slight taper crimp to keep everything together.
This load seemed to produce quite a bit of recoil in my 40-65 and no accuracy at all.
Q  What should I change.
Also what is the advantage of semolina as opposed to cream of wheat for instance ( and where does one get cream of wheat anyway )
Any help would be appreciated.
Mike.

I don't know about your technical questions but I do know you can get Cream of Wheat in the cereal aisle in most big grocery stores.

In Australia? I shoot my 40-65 with smokeless and no over powder wads and no fillers.

You can get into serious difficulty when putting fillers on top of smokeless powder.    Almost NEVER a good idea.

I don't use wads or fillers but many in the CBA did many years ago with no problems that I remember.Mainly dacron wads IIRC.
I did use super grex(shot buffer) over medium loads in a 30-30 bench gun many years ago.it worked but wasn't worth the extra effort.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Glad you and the gun survived using fillers over smokeless powder! That's the equivalent of adding the weight of the filler to the bullet's weight, and could have caused huge pressure spikes!
I shoot my .40-65 using 4198, and anywhere from a light 315 gr., 350 gr., or a 420 gr. bullet. Varying the charge depending on which bullet I use. But no fillers or wads ever.

I'm sorry for my ignorance but I used the semolina to support the bullet while I applied the  taper crimp. I thought the idea of something over the powder was to keep it near the primer and also to stop powder from spilling into the action.
Seems like i'm on a steep learning curve at present.
I think I already mentioned it but I would prefer to shoot fixed ammo and not have to breech seat.

But nitro does require neck tension, so necksizing (or FL sizing) the case is a must.  Just a taper crimp won't do it.

A warning; if you resize be aware some dies squeeze more than others and can resize the bullet when seated in a too tight neck. Ideally a couple thousandths squeeze is good and if tighter a neck expander set to the bullet’s diameter or a thousandth smaller will put things in good order and no crimping is required or should be used.

Also I will affirm the previous posts and say stay away from wads and fillers of any sort. Smokeless is a completely different animal than black and all thoughts black should be removed from the thought process when dealing with smokeless. Good luck in your venture.
