My 45/70 rolling block has a 33” (it had a mishap) 1:18 twist octagonal heavy barrel, I breach seat a 500gn 20:1 lead projectile in front of 92gns of wano2P  black powder, and aperture sights, never worried about total burn, just ompf for the lump of lead

The burn rate vs lenght is easilly found.   It will also depend on the bullet you plan to use.   So; pick your bullet and load up 100 rounds with as much powder as the case will hold.   Now wait for a nice clean snow.   Take the rifle out and shoot it over the snow.  Cut  off an inch at a time until you see unburned powder on the snow,   There's your optimum barrel length for the load.   No guarentee that it will shoot accurately though!

My go-to hunting rifle is an original 1874 Sharps that was re-barreled long ago.   It has a half round/octagonal barrel 28" long and weighs about 9.5 pounds if I remember right.

As someone said, "There is no one correct answer."

Westerner, the correct answer is the one that the individual wants to hear.

I'm going have the barrel made up at 32"
Much Obliged

Personally, I can't imagine dragging a 32" barrel on an action as long as a Martini around in the woods while hunting. 26" would be my choice on that action and 28" on most other, shorter actions. Saving a couple cents per shot to get more complete powder burn makes no sense to me. Between the weight and unhandy length that will be a "no fun" rifle to carry for hunting.

Merkava will be hunting/shooting from a "comfortable blind". No hiking through woods.

I think “spacious” would be the word I would be looking for in the brochure.

It's going  to be a real comfortable blind built by the kids so grandpa Merkava can sit watching the elk feed in the irrigated alfalfa field..
We call it.. pivot elk.
Now then, this Zulu action, a lovely Martini Henry with a mighty colorful history, is going to be barreled up in the venerable and classic 45-70 Govt.
I've asked a variety of questions, received some interesting answers.
Since this is a metallic sight rifle in the making, I am going to elect the 32" barrel length.
I get chauffeured out to edge of the field in a Kawasaki mule, I only have to walk 50 yards.

It's not a good idea to start a fight with an old man. He can't run and he can't fight any more. But there is one thing he will do. He will shoot you.  " John Steinbeck"

Bob Gordons blind is on skids. He can move it around with a tractor. Has a kitchen, TV, radio, lights, two shooting stations with hinged shutters, a heater and a cot for taking naps. In the mountains of Idaho.

A picture of a friend shooting a Trapdoor saddle-ring carbine.

Note the burn!

Warren Briar! A friend and an absolutely outstanding Gunsmith. Some here might actually know him from the Quigley Matches.

Neat pic. I have to ask: Is he breech seating that round? I see what appears to be a seating tool laying on the bench near his elbow.
If that's an original, it is in good shape for a carbine. Lots of really nice rifles around, few carbines are pristine.

CF I believe that is his Trapdoor that he also made a set Trigger for from scratch.
And a very dear friend.

Looks like a blow tube neatly rigged to work with a trapdoor.
