There is among 65 - 70 year old collector/shooters of Ballards a popular belief that every time one acquires a new Ballard that act extends the life span a minimum of 6 more months. This viewpoint always serves to justify one more Ballard.
Here is one of mine that’s in its second configuration in my care. The barrel is a cut-rifled, 1 in 14” twist, cal. 28-30 by Bob “Red” Scherer. An 8 groove w/.025 wide lands. About a #5 wt., 30” full octagon of about 16#. I shot it on a plain Ballard action for 20+ years w/both 287221-120 and 287221-130 bullets w/13.8 grns. #4227. I shot my lone 250 x 250 in a 100 yard match at Aurora SC along w/a .245 group in the same relay with this rifle around 1990.
The reconfiguration took place around 1997 when a nice factory engraved Rigby Ballard action came into my possession. I refitted the Scherer barrel on that action and did a new “scratch” stock job with this great piece of wood with checkering by ASSRA member Wayne Belec.
Oh it still shoots just fine!

Beautiful Ballard, and looks very appropriate in it's present configuration. Much like a deluxe Ballard #6 with the stocks and current lever on it!

Unlike the fellows that know what's on what version, I only know what I like on Ballard rifle- and I like what I see here. Nice lookin' rifle. It's especially pleasing to hear it shoots so well, too. Smiley

Beautiful rifle! Bet that wood sparkles in the sunlight. I’m always pleased with the ball & spur lever. The inlaid walnut ball in the lever is another neat touch. Topped off with the engraved frame completes it— of course it also shoots!

It's my favorite Ballard lever too!

A good friend Neal Rice, figured out how to attach walnut pieces in the loop without screws. and then checkered both sides on my highwall. The two pieces are easily removed if needed. He managed the same using snaps as on clothing, for a pistol grip cap. Nifty!!

I'd like to see the engraving on this rifle.
