My Newest Rifle (Read 6674 times)

	About 4 months ago, I violated my self-imposed rule,that having achieved the age of 80,I didn’t need to buy any more rifles. Then while visiting an old friend I hadn’t seen in a couple years, he showed me a rifle that he had bought at a regional estate auction, sometime a year or two after my last visit. After admiring it, he then intimated that it might be available to me. Of course I ended up taking it home. This rifle is a Win. “Laudensack Pattern” 3rd model Schuetzen cal. .22LR. Manufactured in 1913 w/a 30” #3 full oct. bbl. It was made as a scope only gun. (No sight slots in the bbl.) which I find attractive as at this point iron sights on my rifles are purely decorative! It is about a 95% original conditioned gun w/a few small rust spots, (from bad storage not usage) with an exc. bore. It weighs right on 13 lbs. with Lyman 5A scope and palm rest. Which is just about right for an old guy. The original factory Win. doorknob pattern palm rest was of course lost. To find one of these Win. originals today would be akin to hitting a power ball. This led me to crafting the one on the rifle here that would look and function somewhat appropriately. I’ve actually been shooting it quite a bit, indoors at 50’, trying to accustom myself to shooting offhand right handed after 65+ years of muscle memory on the opposite side. If there is a racier looking American Schuetzen rifle than a Win. Laudensack pattern, I can’t imagine what it would be.

	Beautiful rifle, the 1885 Laudensack pattern is one of most graceful, classic designs ever produced. I like my Ballards and Hepburn’s, but this 1885 model is hard to best!

	This is a Laudensack HW Barry Darr built back in 1972 if memory serves me right. That I once owned and it also has the Laudensack Lever of which is not also seen very much that I know of. It was chambered in 405 Winchester but actually probably something else. Because the rims on the new 405 Hornady Brass had to be thinned. I shot it breech seated and off the bench for about a year. But it was also pretty brutal to shoot. I did not want to re-barrel it being a full muzzle loading outfit. This rifle would shoot 3/8 inch 5 shot groups consistently at a 100 yds. But I mostly shot in 200 yard score matches and it also came with Darr bullet moulds for both muzzle loading and or breech seated that also came with this rifle. Besides the 310 tool Barry also made everything else for this rifle. (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links)

	Your rifle has all the right options: the schuetzen double-set triggers, spur lever, beautiful wood, etc. The palm rest looks like it belongs. A great rifle!

	I've had the opportunity to shoulder the rifle and test the palm rest.I don't think I got it too wet from drooling.

	Having had the pleasure to shoot with Dennis on many occasions (he’s a DSA member). Dennis has this habit of always having the best most interesting eye candy. He says he is not buying any more but I look forward to the next beautiful find. Besides being just a dam nice guy he has a lot of talent dispite being left handed

	A rifle this fine could easily make anyone's best rifle in their collection! It's one of those that's just so nicely made, and in such beautiful shape still!

	I am too much a newbie to the HW community to know about Laudenstack, et al. But I do appreciate a fine-looking high wall such as yours. Nice job on the palm rest and that stock is awesome. That comb towers over the wrist like a dreadnaught parting the waves. Racy indeed!!!

	Very tastefully done! I also plan to stop acquiring new (to me) single shot rifles when I turn 80. That gives me just eight more years, better get cracking. Rich
