Double set triggers Winchester

I understand, correctly or incorrectly, that a dst pistol grip tang from a Winchester Hi wall will fit a low wall receiver from a Low wall Winder musket but not a regular Lo wall. I that a true statement? Maybe the Lo wall Winder is a cut down Hi wall. Tossing the idea around to make tack driver .22LR from a beater musket. Nothing carved in Stone though.
Thanks for the thoughts
Best Richard

All of what ssdave said is true, but the double sets sure do look nifty!! and one does not have to use the set trigger. Also, shooting from the bench lessens some of the problems mentioned above.  Ballard double set triggers are better than most in my opinion, excluding some of the custom makers triggers. Neal Rice was making a very light single trigger for Ballard rifles, but unfortunately only had time to make a few. There are other trigger wizards out there, others here may be able to identify them.

I have a shooting friend that had a standard low wall fitted up with MVA Helm triggers and made into a beautiful shooting 22. It is a gorgeous rifle and if he doesn't hold the club record at a hundred yards then there's only one other guy that does shooting a tricked-out Model 52 Winchester. Maybe he'll see this post and post some pictures of his rifle.

Ssdave, thanks for that info, it sure makes things simpler.
rkba2nd, is Neal Rice the same barrel maker?
Oldwin, pics are always welcome.
What is the largest dia barrel the low wall will accept at the breech?
Thanks fellows
Richard

Richard Binger comes to mind but I am not sure if he is still around and doing trigger work.

Not sure I agree entirely, it requires just as much, perhaps more skill and practice to manage a DST as a good standard trigger. DST will increase lock time and perhaps introduce vibration, it takes a much better offhand shooter than myself to have these things effect the score. The 10 pound plus weight of most target rifles does a lot to dampen vibration. I don’t shoot any bench, so I cannot speak to DST effecting score off the bench.

On trigger work that I have done on 1911’s and three screw Ruger single actions I made blocks with pins that are used to locate the trigger/sear assemblies and also jigs to locate same for stoning. Also adjusting trigger over travel is most important for a good trigger job too.
Thanks Richard

Ssdave sold me a very early LW action. Built it with a Benchmark barrel and MVA wide double set triggers.  The triggers came in January of the first year that they were available.  The triggers were "perfect", both fit and finish.

Grand Slam  To answer your question regarding Neal Rice, no, Neal was not a barrel maker, a very fine gunsmith and stockmaker, and best friend, yes. He also worked for Matt Canjar, making and helping to design triggers for many years. Neal sadly passed away September 2014.

My 2c. I do not have any experience with double set trigger. Single set yes. I can see and appreciate their use in hunting, but not for target shooting for the reasons aptly described previously. I have two MS rifles and a Drilling with original ss triggers.  The most accurate rifle that I have is a Mauser M66 with a trigger that Canjar made for me specifically in the early 90's to fit this UIT free rifle. It is set for 7 grams ( call it 1/4oz) and breaks smoother than frozen filament glass even today after rifle has rebarrelled the rifle twice

BPCRDave the choice to use a Benchmark Barrel probably has allot to do with the outstanding accuracy success. I am actually quite surprised that others have not chosen to use the same. Not sure where they stand right now but they were producing the most accurate Rimfire barrels that were being made.
That is also a very Stunning and very Charming LW Rifle that you have.

I agree, a most beautiful rifle with the target to match.
Cheers Richard
