Cutting Homer Dangler stain?

I found some I had forgotten about, and have a walnut stock to stain, then finish. Can I cut it with rubbing alcohol? Methylated spirits?

Based on my limited experience, I doubt rubbing alcohol would work nearly as well as methylated spirits/ethanol.

Well, I mixed it 1:1 with methylated spirits and managed to make a huge mess of the job -- streaks, drips, blotchy areas. Live and learn!
Guess I will try sanding it back a little and see if that helps some.

Dangler's stains were alcohol-based (and I assume the contemporary versions sold by Log Cabin and others are also), so I'm not sure what your problem is.  Perhaps the stain is too old?  What wood are you trying to stain?  Try wiping it off first with straight alcohol/acetone and see if things don't smooth out before sanding.

Bill, the stain may be eight years old or older and is marked James Klein, Homer Dangler stain. I was using it on an American black walnut stock set for my rolling block. 
Of course, I had gone ahead and sanded before reading your advice. It is better than it was, but needs work.

Aha!  It's not a batch/version made by Mr. Dangler.  Is there a list of contents on the container?    Specifically, something that added alcohol would not thin?

Jim Klein took over Homer’s business.  I think they are out of Adrian, Michigan but may be wrong.  Might try calling the Log Cabin shop if you can’t find Jim’s number, they might be able to help you.  Might also ask this question over on the American Longrifle forum.  Lot of very knowledgeable people and they will probably know Jim’s contact info if he is still in business.
