We shoot steel a lot at our club. Easy to spot hits at long range no fiddling with backers etc. Club steel is fine but it’s one size fits all. Have always used my own and jointly owned plates kept padlocked away From the .223 shooters. Recently bought a set of light easy to set gongs paint them with stencils. Also allows me to shoot club auxiliary ranges lightly used too
They are ASSRA 21 ring size. Set up settle down on the gong switch to the ASSRA paper target. Strong believer “called flyers” are human errors. Good training is go 10 straight on the gong target get a softball sized group then switch to paper.

Another photo.
Gongs came from owlcreekfabrication. eBay seller from Pennsylvania reasonable prices quick shipper .
Use these offhand keeping track of hit/miss rates ideal is all in the 21 ring, hard to do but “ absence of bad shots” makes the score. Am about a 7 moa offhand shooter these are 4 Moa. Would like to have a full size ASSRA target gong. Problem is large is heavy, 8 inch gongs 5/8 inch ar500 weigh 8.5 lbs. owlcreek does customs would make 1/4 inch gong, question is will larger & thinner stand up to steady diet of 32 caliber lead . Club has bent from impact 200 yard rams, just flipped to straighten out. Lot of 45/70 strikes ASSRA target would not see, 1/4 may work.

Steel plates are excellent practice targets, as they allow you to shoot for very long periods of time without having to go change targets, or apply pasters to targets.
Having various sizes for various distances is also a great way to save a lot of walking, and improve your skills at further distances.
The first time I handed one of my single shot rifles to a friend and let him look through the iron sights at a 30" plate at 1,000 yds. away, he looked at me with a puzzled look. He asked me how he could hit a 30" target that was smaller than the .040" wide front post? But once he figured out how to hold the sights, and got his first hit he couldn't stop smiling.

Hey, Boats, that's the first time I have seen my name used as a subject for a thread!
Are you saying that I'm a 'human error'?

That’s a good one missed the fact it’s your screen name. No insult intended .
