After this treatment, I wash them with soap and water, using a stiff tooth brush to get at the nooks and crannies. The checkering surprised me, by appearing still rather crisp and distinct. Notice the crud still coming out, discolouring the foam.

Several treatments later, I am still not satisfied. The wood has lightened and is actually not so ‘spongey’ I will repeat this treatment for a few more days and see if the wood improves or not.
