Extractor thoughts

I am not impressed with the 6 o'clock extractor position on the Hauck and am considering a 9 o'clock position on my current build. Even though I feel strongly that a traditional falling block should have a rimmed case, I am also considering a rimless extractor; the Ruger #1 extractor is really quite good. So I am thinking about a high wall extractor type, powered by the breech block and spring loaded like the Ruger to handle rimless cases. I do not want ejection, just extraction. I would value your ideas.  Thanks.

I have no general beef with the 6:00 extractor position, except when the .22 rimfire firing pin hits on top of it, as it does in several of the Stevens rifles I've built up.

If building a centerfire rifle, I would view moving the extractor a needless exercise.

Pin....that must be specific to the Hauck?  Now I'm out of my depth.  Never even seen a Hauck.

112, thanks for the input. There is a lot of difference between a Stevens and a Winchester or a Hauck! The 9 o'clock extractor position allows for greater extractor movement with out cutting into the chamber area and that is what I need. The movement of the Hauck breech block is at a right angle to the bore, whereas the Stevens uses a 5 degree incline and has more room to move the extractor. It is all compromise!

I can appreciate that.  I do have a couple of central extractor guns that need a strong fingernail or a tool to remove the spent case.  Main cause being that the extractor is stopped from having enough movement by the breechblock.

The Stevens extractor is actuated by the lever, not by the breechblock as the Hopkins & Allen does it. Ditto the Ballard.   (I do so little with Winchesters that I can't recall how they do it.)  The guns I have trouble with are H&A.

A 9:00 extractor tends to twist itself on its' axle, because the point of engagement with the rim is not in the same plane as the point of engagement with the lever, (or the breechblock in some designs).  So it needs to be wider there to keep the extractor under control.  Perhaps formed into a shallow "C" shape to put the two contacts in the same plane?

112, the twisting moment on the 9 o'clock position is interesting. Do not know how to address it! On the 9, the side of the block is cut away to allow for more  movement of the extractor; an option not possible with the 6 o'clock position. The high wall extractor is powered by the breech block and is close to what I need, I suppose. I understand some have been spring loaded to handle rimless like the Ruger. I have not seen one.
Thanks for your input.
