To take it a step further, why is there hesitation on the part of some gunsmiths to weld shut a rimfire firing pin hole to facilitate a centerfire firing pin? That would be the simple solution in the course of converting a rimfire 044 1/2 to centerfire.

So to shift attention slightly, what are your thoughts on converting my rimfire breech block?  This was my original plan until I got a deifinate "not a good idea from the standpoint of safety" from Gail at CPA.

I have one 44 1/2 breech block that was converted from .22 rimfire to centerfire, by an unknown gunsmith, it headspaced perfectly with my .32-20 re-bore original barrel, I’ve fired it hundreds of times, no issues whatsoever so far. I also have two original centerfire 44 1/2 breech blocks that were bushed for a smaller diameter firing pin, no problem with them either.
Possibly Gail didn’t want to do the conversion???

Could be and thanks for the info!

" Very cool and thanks! "

Just hoping it might help. Unfortunately when these conversations get long winded I actually loose my place in regards to what anyone actually is looking for. No excuse for not going back to the start of it all and it is a bad habit for me to break by not doing just that.

No issues at all with your response.  I actually kick started gnoahhh's post from the other day as his suggestion went without attention.  I like the Neidner conversion.  I assume the drawing is for a 44 1/2 block but I would also assume that it wouldn't be hard interpreting it for a 044 1/2.  Thanks again!

Actually the drawing is universal and not breech block specific. Just need if necessary to make some adjustments for it to also fit your own needs.

Actually CPA's bushings are allot easier to make including the firing pin itself. Just can't find a drawing of it right now to be able to share with you right now. I do have one of each in my spare parts kit. But I am going to go and look to see if it is actually in the drawing of the action in my owners manual if I can now find it. If not I will try and post some pictures of both at a later date.

I'm pretty sure the drawing of the Mann/Niedner bushed block is a Winchester highwall block. A Stevens 44 1/2 has a cut out on the legs to allow the block to rock back and the firing pin moves at a pretty extreme angle to the face of the block because the hammer sits so low in the action.
