Smart Spare Parts

Curious what the conventional wisdom is on spare parts to carry to the range or wherever. Specifically CPA 44 1/2
with rimfire and 38-55 barrels. What is it you folks have to swap out after years of shooting from springs, to pins, screws you name it.

Thanks

I picked up a parts kit from CPA that basically covers all of the parts that might be in need. Since 1998 I have only had to replace the front trigger return spring, a hammer spring, a sear spring but it was not actually broken I just wanted to double it up. Prior to the free firing pin up grade I have lost few of those and not a one since. I have actually used allot of these parts for others who were in immediate need. And they were all replaced by CPA at no cost to me. CPA supplied several of these kits for our ISSA Regional events prize table. I got lucky one year and my name was pulled out of a hat and I chose this donated prize that was always the first one to go. So I would highly recommend getting one of the same and I always keep mine in my shooting bag and on hand.

The only thing I have ever done to mine is to put Loctite on the hammer spring tension screw. I have a spare firing pin that I ordered with my rifle, just in case. The best "part" to have in your kit is a slave pin the width of the block/extractor and with beveled ends to use for ease in reassembling when switching blocks/extractors. I made mine from a piece of a drill bit shank of the correct size.

Thanks for the advice I will follow it with a call to CPA though I’ve never seen or heard of a parts First Aid kit. Regardless there is always a life cycle on flat springs, firing pins or anything else that rides on pins. So the question is, can I remain and shoot long enough to warrant replacements ? Just in case buy them.

Up to you but nice to have at a match should you need something.

I've found having a spare rifle is better than having spare parts at a match.  Having both would be best.

Might add these prize donation's were made for the Modesto Rifle Club's three day ISSA Regional event. Should Gail ask where you heard about them.

+++ When I competed with an M1, small parts could be installed with no tools, just strong hands and a butt stock cleaning kit. Now with SS Rifles, a back-up gun is the way to go.

To carry the thread further, what are some of the spare parts that others carry for other makes of rifle, ie: Winvhester, Ballard, Martini, etc.?

I too subscribe to the spare rifle bit, but it would frustrate me if I'm having a good run with a favorite gun only to have to switch over to another one because I didn't have a small part in my kit.

For my flat spring high wall,  I have a main spring and a firing pin.  I also have a sear spring but that takes a bit more to replace.  At big matches like Spokane, I use a different 32-40 and ,22 for offhand so those rifles would take over in case of a major failure.

Come to think of it, I do have spare parts like springs and screws and barrels and other assorted stuff, but I never take them with me to a match. I almost always take a spare rifle and ammo.

Last month Pats rolling block broke a main spring. Pat didn't have a spring or a spare rifle and I didn't have a spare rifle so Pat had to use his .22 Ballard the rest of the first day. It all worked out well for me because Pat dumped a lot of points with that .22 in the winds of Eastern Montana.  Smiley Smiley

If I would have loaned him a rifle he would have beat me for sure. Because that there is how it always goes.  Angry
