Barrels and Bullets

Print Post
I started down this road a little over 2 years ago and have been pleased with my progress so far. I have (5) different single shot rifles all chambered in 45-70. Overall my performance has improved so now I want to better understand the idea of matching bullets to the barrel. To that end I slugged the barrels of all (5) rifles and recorded the results ( see pic below).

In addition I listed the cast lead bullets I have been using for reloading to this point. What I am looking for is feedback re whether or not the bullets are too small or too big for specific rifles or are they just right. Any other relevant comments or feedback would be appreciated. Also any comments or recommendation for reading materials, videos or articles related to paper patching would be appreciated.

With the exception of the Trapdoor all of these guns will currently shoot a 3" to 5" group (iron sights) at 100 yards.

TIA

I would be way more interested in what my throat diameter is over my groove&bore dimensions.

To me is just exactly the wrong approach. One should pick the bullet he chooses to use and to then have a custom chambering reamer ground to specifically fit it. More times than not one has to try and find a bullet that might fit after the fact. It is just the opposite approach of how to go about doing it right based on my own experiences to date.
But it also does help all of the mould makers stay in business so it may not be a bad thing. That is if one can afford to keep on buying moulds until he can hopefully find one that might just actually work.

Thanks, this is also on my list of things to do - I am trying to source some Cerrosafe to make 'throat' castings of all my rifles but having a hard time finding it here in Canada.

Thanks JL, that's food for thought.

Matching a bullet to a barrel is much cheaper and easier than matching a barrel to a bullet.

Only when using fixed ammunition are neck /chamber dimensions important.

Try RotoMetals their price is about half of what Brownells wants and they also have the time related shrinkage rates on their site.
