I have been trying to contact Elk Ridge and 4D reamer rentals. No response from either. Has anyone rented from either source recently?

4D last fall.  Forget the phone, which you probably already know.    You had to email them in order to get a response back then.  Still took a couple days.

Just returned a .17 hornet reamer to 4D.  Don't think the reamer had ever been used. Everything done over internet. Oldwyo

I have found them to be harder and harder to deal with. Plus trying getting a reamer drawing of a particular grind profile is next to impossible. Too bad as I did use them in the past and like the idea of renting.

I have rifles in the shop that need reamers in calibers, 22 K Hornet, 38-56 and 300 Winchester Magnum. Hopefully I will hear from one of the rental sources soon.

(this is my surmise from communication I've had with them through the two reamer rentals I've done in the past 18 months) They are completely swamped by all of the orders from people who started projects while staying home through covid. They've been increasing their reamer inventory, but that can only help so much, especially with less commonly used calibers.

I waited more than 6 months for them to get a 32 S&W L reamer available, but as soon as it was available I got an email checking that I still wanted it and service was exactly as I have come to expect from them from that point in the process forward.

I rented a .25-20 WCF reamer from CH4D in July.  All done via the web site.  Took 2-3 days to get an acknowledgement, and about ten days for them to send it, which I chalk up to heavy demand.   Reamer looked and cut like new.  No complaints.

Fred from 4D is also an instructor and involved with the gunsmithing courses at the local community college. Probably started last week or coming Monday. Might be busier than normal.

I ordered a reamer and head space gauges on 8-20 from 4D and had a reply in 30 minutes. You won't get them to answer the phone but E-MAIL is fast. I have had good service from them for many years.

Talked to a guy at ReamerRental/Elk Ridge a couple of months ago about a reamer.  He was running the site for his son and had little knowledge about reamers/firearms.  Nice guy, but little help.

John Taylor has a 38-56 reamer that he might rent/loan to a fellow gunsmith. That said, having tried for several years to get mine to be competitive in BPCR I'm of the opinion that you would be crazy to waste your $$ building one. 38-40RH, 38-55 or 38-50 if you want a 38. If you do build one make sure the barrel is long enough to set back to one of the other cartridges once you give up on the 38-56. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Waste of 3yr+.

Second that thought -- I went thru several iterations of twist-rate, etc, trying to get a 38-56 to shoot with BP.   They'd do fine with smokeless but otherwise never got to a useful point.  One of those things that "looks like it ought to work".

I heard back from Elk Ridge earlier this week, the 300 WM reamer arrived today. The 38-56 is for a restoration on a 1886 rifle, original octagon barrel and SST, the barrel is marked 38-56. Original rough bore is now pristine with a T.J's liner.  If he wants to hunt with it he will probably be happy with the results. Thanks for the offers from forum members for loans of reamers, if I have further issues I will be in contact.
