I am building a 36 caliber early style flintlock rifle with a set of parts from Track of the Wolf.   It is a bit more of an intimidating project than I thought it would be, but it will get done thios winter.  I'm in no hurry.   Best thing about a flintlock is no need for caps or primers.   I can have all the flints I want for the picking up in a couple of places around here.

What do you folks think of Jim Kibler's kits?

I built one in .58 for flintlock season here in PA. The kit was easy to assemble compared to others. The swamped barrel gives it excellent balance. I love the way it handles. Jim has a number of assembly video's on U-Tube. You won't be disappointed.

I'll probably go with a Kibler Colonial kit - Due to the price and great kit I think that's the way to go.

Kibler kit is the way to go. I have built several. They take me 4-7 hours and they're ready to stain and finish.

I will second the Kibler kit.    I’ve built 25 - 30 muzzleloaders and made all the mistakes you can make doing them. (I build mine from scratch pretty much, And would not recommend thatfor a first effort)
The Kibler kit comes ready to assemble….it may require some minor fitting of some parts ( I’ve been told that sandpaper is all that’s necessary to accomplish the fitting by several who have done this.)
You will end up with a very nice rifle that you can be proud of by using a Kibler kit.

Too many rifles.....not enough money

Yes, VERY nice looking kits compared to other kits on the market

$800 - $1,200 for a kit in my opinion

Kibler's stuff looks pretty amazing.  He has a series of instructional videos on YouTube on how to build his kits.  And that strikes me as great customer service.

I agree and have been watching his videos - They are very nice and show you how to make a beautiful rifle.

I think Kiblers kits are about as foolproof as you can make one. All the scarry stuff is pretty much done you just need to finish and assemble not to mention what he charges for high grade maple is very reasonable. I'd love to build one of his southern mountain kits in .32 or .36 caliber but I want the percussion lock of a later era rifle and he's not doing percussion yet. Watch some of his youtube stuff and it will help you decide.

I have been watching his videos and am trying to decide on the wood I need to select.

Having built a dozen longrifles, all from blanks, I can tell you Jim’s kits are pretty much just assemble and finish.  I know the quality of Jim’s custom builds before he started the business and he is top notch.  If you want a rifle with the proper architecture, have the ability and can spend the money buy his kit, I doubt you will regret it.
If you go over to the americanlongrifle site, you will find dozens of people that have assembled them.  Jim also frequents the site.

I have been over to the American Longrifle site and there is a ton of info regarding the Kibler's kits and I have found no dislike of Kibler's kits.
I just need to deside on which wood to get, the Cherry, Maple or Walnut. I am going to get the Colonial kit.

Cherry and walnut look nice but maple is the easyist to work when sanding and finishing. If you like the look the extra fancy maple that would be a very pretty longrifle. But its your build so its up to what you prefer. If you do go maple I would suggest using stain from laurel mountain forge rather than the old aquafortis / nitric acid stain.

I have been teaching kibler kit assembly classes at the NMLRA for a couple years. All but one student went home with a finished gun in the five day class. Next class will be in March 2022.

There is nothing nicer than a nice piece of curly maple on a longrifle.  Not knocking walnut or cherry but you can’t wrong with the maple and anything from somewhat plain to high end with lots of curl will look good.
If Redrighthand is who I think he is you can’t go wrong with him either! Wink

I agree, Kibler’s kits look to be the best kit’s you can buy, if you want that style gun. I have been watching his videos and they are VERY helpful.

I’ve read a lot over on the American Longrifles.org site and have learned a lot regarding the Kibler.
I have placed an order for a Kibler’s Colonial American Longrifle in .50 cal. with the maple stock and a patch box. I was told that I would get it in about 3 weeks.

I would consider a .58. A .50 is going to be heavy. A .58 weighs about 9-9.5lbs  so a fifty is going to be heavier.

I sure wish that Kibler would make a Mountain rifle in .50 Cal with brass fittings.
