Can someone on the forums tell me what length the staffs are on the gallery sights (Peep sights for sporting rifles).Dutchers book pictures them but does not mention length of staff,I am aware they were made in a short and long version.Have one I believe to be the longer model but need to know length to be sure.Does not have the original eye disc, would like to find an original for it, if anyone on the forums might have one they would be willing to sale. Thanks in advance John Robert

The standard Gallery tang sight measures @ 2.825" tall, and tall version measures 3.75" tall. Measured from the pivot screw to the top of the staff.

If you contact Tony Maddox at the Original Sight Co. he should be able to set you up with an original style aperture, but it will be a nice freshly blued repro.
I have spares, but I make a habit of not selling any Ballard parts I might need in the future.

Thankyou marlinguy for the information, mine looks to be the long staff version,I know it's a long shot finding an original.Do you know if all original Ballard tang sights used a common aperture? What was the original finish used on Ballard sights? (Assume rust blued) would consider a reproduction if I can't find an original. Thanks again for responding.

Maybe there were 3 lengths? Mine is 3.25", c/l of pivot screw to top of staff. Came off a #3. Also missing the peep disk.

You can't make good decisions without good information.

I suppose it's possible. But since these sights often are very close from one company's to the other, it's also possible a staff could be changed on a base and might have a number of different lengths.
John Dutcher's book shows two, and that's all I've seen. But I never say never.

PS-The 2.825" height on a Gallery tang sight is the same height as a Midrange Vernier used often on various Marling Ballard rifles.
Marlin had another taller midrange vernier that is extremely rare early version that's taller than the standardized Midrange vernier, but shorter than the Longrange vernier. John doesn't show it in his fine book, but I've seen two of them on early Ballard rifles. I have one on an original Pacific in .40-85.
