Rodney Storie High Wall - Suggestions?
Jul 23rd, 2021 at 8:21am
Print Post
I just bought a Winchester High Wall casting set from Rodney Storie and want to get started.

I thought you could buy the blueprint for $10 on the forum, but I don't see that post anymore. I think I need those blueprints, and Rodney didn't include them.

Any insights anyone would like to share on finishing the action would be greatly appreciated!  Smiley

The gunsmithing books are nice references, but no start-to-finish information that I've seen for a project like this.

You should be able to get the plans that you need from the ASSRA Archives.

Thanks. I knew where to get it previously, but forgot.

It would be nice to get some input from folks who have put one of these together.

You would think there would be a comprehensive reference, but, not that I've seen. Rats!

After building a Borchardt from Rodney I suggest getting an original to study.  Buy one and resell or borrow one.

An investment casting will be under size compared to the original (15%, I think), so original dimensions do not apply.

I believe the molds are oversized to accommodate for shrinkage

The plans from the ASSRA Archives were done for working with Rodney's casting kits. the cost is $10.00 on 8.5"x11" post paid. Will always take more $$ as it helps keep the Archives open.

just an opinion; but if you figure/value your time at more than $1.00 an hour I would suggest just buying one from MVA.

It would take away from the experience from building one.

i did one last year at a gunsmithing class that GT here puts on at the gillette college.not being one to do just the plain single trigger straight grip hi wall that everuone was doing i did a pistol grip double set trigger lo wall with a pope lever. i had never done one before.lot of work and a lot of priceless experience. GT is a great teacher and i learned a lot from him.(don't tell him i said this, his head will get to big).this year i an gonna do an 84 farrow.the time is well spent if you are seeking knowledge and an appreciation of what it takes to gettin them shooting.jump in with both feet and hang on for some frustating moments and a lot of wow it works moments.   good luck  tony <><
