The 32 S&W long is a nifty cartridge, and inherently quite accurate. I don't think it would be too much for a 44, but would have to do a little research to be sure. I am sure someone here has had some experience with it. Mine is limited to handguns. Just a thought I have had for a Ballard No.2 cast action. I will be interested to see what you decide.

I still occasionally shoot my 32-40 Stevens with the lugged hammer. A 38-40 would be fun. Hey I have a box of brass somewhere, maybe I should make one.

I have a lugged 38-55 I shoot quite a bit.
I figured the 3840 would be fine at the lower pressures I plan to shoot

The .38-40's base diameter is even larger than the ..32-40 family, so given equal pressures the bolt thrust will be even higher.

Personally I wouldn't even consider it, especially without the lugged hammer, even if scrupulously loaded to blackpowder pressure.

I have one in 44-40 that's a lot of fun to shoot. Depending on whos book you look at the pressure can run from 11,000 to 22,000 for the 44-40 but SAMMI says 13,000 cup. SAAMI says the 38-40 is 14,000 psi.

I would do the re-bore to .32 SW long, I personally wouldn’t re-bore a 44 to .38-40 to be on the safe side.
