How and What to Convert a 25 Rimfire Barrel To?

I've talked about this beofre on the ASSRA site but last night the subject came up in a conversation with a buddy.  I have a very light contour Stevens 25 rimfire barrel off a 044 1/2 that I would like to put back into use.  He suggested I reline the barrel and we explored 22 rimfire and centerfire liners with the latter looking like it was way too much for my barrel.  The muzzle measures 9/16-in and my orginal thought was to use one for a 22 Hornet conversion.  But then the 17 Hornady came up, which seems like a reasonable solution.  Has anyone converted a 25 rimfire in this manner and what were your experiences?  Thanks in advance!

My 044 1/2 has been rebarreled sometime in the distant path to a 218 Bee.  I don't load it hot and it shoots lights out with jacketed bullets.  Tom

Was it a new barrel or a relined original?  Thanks

The muzzle end of the barrel being so small it might possibly raise a concern depending on the diameter of the liner wanting to be used.

It did with the center fire liner.  I can’t remember the diameter at this moment but it effectively reduced the muzzle end to a thin veneer.

If the .25 rimfire bore is still decent in your rifle, maybe leave it alone and re-barrel it to .17 wsm. You should be able to use your .25 rimfire extractor, breech block and firing pin with .17 wsm. Also you would retain your original barrel for collectibility, as there wasn’t many 044 1/2’s made.

That's pretty much the plan.  According to Gail at CPA the 25 extractor will also work for the 17.  Any thoughts on the strength of the liner in the barrel?  Should I have any concerns with a 17 Hornady liner shooting loose in such a thin barrel?  Thanks

I would try and run that by John Taylor on this site and hopefully he might even chime in. Quite few folks her speak very highly about his liner work.

Maybe, depending on the sights, go with 22LR? If, it'll wear barrel sights, it won't be easy to get the full accuracy potential out of a modern 17 rimfire, but it'll cost quite a bit more to feed it, for a fun plinker? Best of luck with the project.

25 hornet? Seems like I read here it's possible to use a 22 hornet reamer with an appropriate sized pilot. You will have to trim the brass to 25 RF length. Of course it would require converting to CF.

The liner for 17 is 3/8" diameter. 22 RF liners come in several sizes, 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2". Sometimes the 25 RF firing pin works with 22 LR. With the high cost of ammo I have converted many to 22 LR. If the liner is installed correctly they is no chance that it will come loose.

One problem you might have, with a 3/8” liner, I think you would run into the front sight dovetail when drilling, also possibly even drilling for a 5/16” liner. Those 044 1/2 barrels have a small diameter at the muzzle.
My 044 1/2 .25 RF is .620 at the muzzle.

Yeah, as I said earlier it just about turns the muzzle end into a veneer.  However I came across a post on the cast boolit forum that talked about making centerfire cases for the 25 Stevens out of cut down 22 Hornet brass and sizing down 25 caliber bullets to fit the 251 bore.  I want to convert the 044 1/2 to centerfire and this may be the most practical route to go.  Thanks!

PS - I just read back a couple posts and it sounds like jimmy is pretty much saying the same thing
