Making a Remington #7 RB Sight Base

Print Post
Several of you helped me a few weeks ago with your thoughts on what I needed for a sight on this gun.  So I thought I would update what I found and am including a few pictures of the making of the base/extension for the sight.  The sight I found was a Lyman 1x, this sight is nice and low.  I removed the base and only used the sight body.  As most of you know the #7 sight mounts to a frame extension/base that is dovetailed into the frame, unlike other sights that mount to the upper tang. They did this because of the unusual shape of the tang.
Bear with me, this is a hobby for me and I'm not a machinist! Wink

First photo is sight as I received it.
Second, trying to get the layout correct.  This was actually version two, I used version three which moved the sight back and down a bit more.  You can see the punch marks.
Next couple I'm cutting metal.
Five, things are progressing.

First photo, it's pretty much done just needs some final shaping and polishing.
Last three, sight base with sight body completed and mounted.

The sight base has to be functional as well as look correctly on the gun.  The rear profile should be a continuous line from the frame up through the sight base.  Mine is close but not as well as I hoped.

Some guys get to have all the fun!!! It's really looking good!

I have one of these on the horizon for the same rifle I'm building and some little idiot's whispering in my ear to make it out of Damascus...

A machinist is someone who fabricates things in metal using machines (with a little handwork allowed where appropriate).  Therefore, bobw, you indeed are one, and a very, very good one to boot.

That's not machine shop work, that's art work / craftsmanship.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.

Between researching, finding a sight, measuring, drawing and then machining and fitting I would be embarrassed to say how many hours were involved in making this thing.  Good thing I’m retired!

Rodney, the frame is your casting.  Just would like to say that I really appreciate you making these available to us!
Greg, I’m sure you will have no problem making one of these.  Not sure I would want to make one from damascus though as tough as you say it it is to machine.

Very impressive work bobw!  I'm constantly amazed at the work that is produced by the various members of this group.  And envious as well!

Regards,
Joe

Yes that really is impressive work both on the action and the site base.I am really impressed with how the radius matches up with the top tang to keep the flow going.
Now for a question, where can I get one of these casting kits. Am more leaning towards a #2 rather than a #7 to start with.
Thanks
Sam

nuclearcricket, pretty sure that rodneys in post #2 is the guy you want to contact.  His name is Rodney Storie, don’t know about a #2 but someone here mentioned he had #7’s at Quigley.  Send him a PM.
