Stevens Sure Shot

I picked up a project rifle recently and it is somewhat puzzling.  It is what DeHaas calls very rare, and he doesn't give any disassembled parts shots.  It is just a cheap boys 22 rifle, but I would still like to get it back in condition.  Most of the things are minor, but the side-swing barrel release button is missing.  DeHaas describes it as a button that is pushed down, but the cross hole through the receiver is perfectly round and not elongated.  It couldn't be pushed down.  Does anyone have one of these guns that they could take a couple of pictures and send them to me or describe exactly how the release system works?  I found these attached pictures of the left and right sides of the release button.
Thanks,
Bruce

Congratulations on your purchase of a scarce little rifle.
When you push in the barrel release button, there is a small stud in the bottom of the frame that is moved downwards that releases the barrel.

From what I understand Stevens introduced the Sure shot rifle about the same time as the favorite, while the favorite rifles sold like hot cakes the Sure shot did not. The Sure shot was a fragile rifle that was easily broken by the rough treatment by boys, and was more costly to manufacture, so Stevens dropped it after a few years.

With all due respect, yes, the Sure Shot is a fragile rifle, thanks to the poorly-designed mechanism that combines opening the barrel and extracting the shell.  But it's not a cheap gun, either in terms of build quality or today's collector value, especially among boy's rifles.  Take the time to do a best-quality restoration and you'll have something that's worth considerable bragging rights.

Sure Shot,  Thanks for the pictures.  I especially like the parts diagram.  I still can't see exactly the shape of the parts.  Is it possible to send a higher resolution picture to me directly?  If possible, send it to my email at rbrucenelson@msn.com.  I don't think the forum allows any larger format pictures to be sent.
Thanks,
Bruce

Be happy to. The parts diagram is from a reprint c1896 Stevens catalog that is somewhat “muddy”. Tonight after work I will try to take a better picture and look in my reference library for any information on the Sure shot that may interest you. In the meantime I will try a larger picture.

This larger picture helps a lot.  From what I can understand, it looks like the plunger lever has a roughly 1/8" stud on it that screws into the plunger nut.  Since it is sitting in a 1/4" hole, it can be wiggled up and down, which is how it pushes the plunger down.  Doesn't seem like a good way to do it, but evidently it works.
Thanks,
Bruce
