Stevens 44, needs non-standard front sight

Rescuing an early Stevens 44, s/n 12828.  Would have relegated it to a parts gun if I hadn't by golly found a new .25 caliber liner in it! A professional job, even though nothing else was.  (The litany of things wrong would fill a book. Headspace was about .035", which'll give you an idea.)

Got everything tightened up and squared away, go to install sights, and Milo got me one last time.  The front slot has been filed wider, so nothing I have fits.

Slot now measures approximately .477" wide (by caliper).  Is that standard for any rifle of the period?  Or am I doing to have to carve one out myself?

Stevens used a wider front sight slot, and a narrower rear sight slot.

Not as wide as this.  Normally the front is ~7/16 (.4375")  This is closer to 15/32, and it's obviously been filed (by a left-handed bear).

I think I can work out mounting 3/4" J.C.Higgins (Weaver G4) on it, so I've got that option.  Milo had installed a buttstock with a higher comb on it, which I was going to ditch, but maybe not. Originality is not the objective here, I just want a shooter.

I just measured a  Stevens Rocky Mountain front sight,  it was .453, and also measured a beaches front sight that was removed from a 44 1/2, and was butchered by removing the globe long ago, it was .469.  Are any of the Stevens front sights that you have too loose to try a shim?

That's a good thought.  If I solder a shim to the Stevens globe that I wanted to use, and file it to fit, that might work.  I think there's too much slack to just leave it loose.

MVA sells various width front base sights. Also has Unertl style dovetail fit bases In sizes that mount removable sights like Lyman 77 or Anschutz.

Personally I would shim what you have first.

Thanks!

That's what I didn't know I needed to know.  But it looks like their bases would still need shimming or more filing.  So I'm thinking that a soldered shim is in my future.  The old sight I'd be doing it to is no museum piece, so no itch there.

They will make the base any size you need, or oversize to allow you to fit it. I don’t remember if you can specify size online for ordering.

They have a specific way they want the slot measured using 1/16” drill bits to determine the width. Mine worked out fine when I did one. Placed order over the phone.

If you haven't already looked you may want search "Stevens sights" on EBay. There is a seller  that sells them in all kinds of sizes. May have one close enough to shim.
Good luck
