1885 Browning (Miroku) drill & tap receiver

I need to mount a scope block to the top of my Browning (Miroku) Model 1885 LoWall's  receiver.
The screws are standard 6-48 thd., and I am concerned that the receiver has been hardened too much to allow that d & t.
Similar Winchester (Miroku) rifles are factory d & t'd, so were done before any heat-treating.
Has anyone out there done that work, and were there any difficulties ?     Perhaps 6-40  or  6-32  screws could be an alternative ?
FYI, Winchester didn't make the caliber I wanted.     Life would have been so simple if Miroku had just d & t'd  all their 1885's ! !

85TD22, If anything you want to stick with the Finer pitch as in 6X48. The coarser pitch is removing more material in the threads. More opportunity to break the Tap.
And as another aside, 6x32 is one of the least liked Taps in the Machining trade.
I have no information as to the Heat treat or lack of or actual. The best guy here just may texasmack who seems to be involved with the information on Browning
reproductions here. HTH regards, FITZ. OLD TUCK Smiley

You might want to do your drilling and tapping on
the barrel to place that rear scope base just in front of the receiver. The barrels are not heat treated to the hardness of the receivers. I have had no problem D&Ting on the barrels. AND definitely to the 6x48 thread.

I have drilled and tapped several Miroku receivers in the past. None were very hard, a HS drill and fresh tap did the job without any issues.

I have installed seater lugs on several different actions without any problems. The only exception was a Borchardt action and it was extremely hard.

Modern Miroku manufactured Browning 1885 High Wall receivers are made from high quality SAE 4140 steel hardened to RC 38-42.  Therefore I would suspect the Low Wall receivers are the same but don't know for sure.  I have never tried to drill and tap the receiver since the many rifles I've encountered were already d & t'd.
