Thousand yard scope set up

This is for the ones they have set their scopes for shooting out to one thousand yards. I have a heavy Highwall in 4570 that I plan on shooting at the Quigley. I talked to a fellow at the Pecos match last fall and he said I needed a 1 inch Unertl rear mount de clicked with the 3/4 inch front mount, Which I have. Also said that I would need special height blocks. So my question is what size blocks do I need?

I'm guessing that firstly the mounts must be high enough for the bell to clear the barrel at maximum height adjustment and secondly that at that adjustment the scope must be looking at something besides the barrel and/or front sight.

I use DZ Arms mounts and I can definitely recommend them.  They work just like an Unertl but have 0.2" more adjustment.  They have plenty of elevation for 1000 yards.  On my Borchardt they are on an MVA 23" scope on 10.34" centers and still reach well beyond 1000 yards.  I'm using a 0.375" rear block, and I think a 0.175" front.  That's good for 200 to about 1150 yards IIRC.   If you were using the standard 7.2" spacing you wouldn't need such a tall rear block of course.

Ballards may be weaker,

Bell usually isn't an issue since most of the disciplines don't allow scopes with a bell. Usually 3/4 straight tubes only. This is my friend Steve's Shiloh Sharps with I believe a DZ Arms scope:

Thanks guys for the information. I have a 10 power Unertl scope and the spacing is 7.2 inches. I do not plan on shooting any NRA matches, because the bell is 1 1/4 inches and NRA rules only allow a 1 inch.

I'll be doing the same thing this year with a Unertl small game rather than shelling out $1150 for another scope.  There is a window that you have to be in for this to work with the 100 min of elevation in the Unertl mounts. I had my blocks milled to the right height which gives me a 300 yd setting of 6 minutes.  That should allow me to shoot the bucket.  My rear block is adjusted so that my 800yd setting should be about 85 min. for the buffalo which gives me about 15 extra minutes of elevation.
With 7.2" centers, each .002" is 1 min of elevation. I suggest that you put a pair of 1/4" blocks on your rifle and see if you can get a 300 yd setting.  From there, you can figure out your come ups to the buffalo and then add a rear block tall enough to get the elevation you need.  For example, changing the rear block to 3/8" (.125" thicker) will get you and additional 62 min.  You may have to machine the rear block to the correct height so that you fit the window.  I can give you my block heights but I have found that Unertl mounts are not very uniform from one to the other.  Bob

Old-win same here could not see buying another scope. I had figured out the .002 equals one minute. Just was looking for a place to start and you guys delivered. Got to get and shoot it to get my 200 yard zero.
