A seller has this listed for $4500, 1885 Winchester with Niedner Rifle Corp. stamped barrel, 25-30-40 Krag, custom stocks & engraved receiver & Litschert 8X scope. Any opinions on what it is worth?

He's had it for quite awhile. My opinion is it was stocked and engraved after being barreled by Niedner.

A stock finished CPA is now $3195.00 so the rifle is really not all that far off. It appears the stocks are not checkered as I really cannot tell so it might be priced just abit on the high side. Add the engraving the scope and the Niedner barrel and the price might actually be pretty fair

Actually the front of the forarm is checkered, as well as the pistol grip portion of the buttstock.

Then it too would add to the asking price.

Most of the Niedner  rifles were stocked by Tom Shelhamer. And I am quite sure that is not a Shelhamer stock.

A lot also depends on whether or not the engraving is signed or can reasonably be attributed to someone of note.  For example, the layout and overall design made me immediately think of Robert Swartley; but the quality of the engraving, especially the gold work seems a bit coarser than what I'd expect from him.  Still and all, $4500 doesn't seem far off to me.

Bill, I would agree that it does not meet the quality of Robert Swartley's engraving. While I do not have a firearm engraved by him, I do have two of his original engravings, and I am quite sure this is not his work. Still, a fine rifle.

All boils down to whether you're buying it because you want it, or you're buying it as an investment.

Engraved fancy guns must appeal to the buyer, often hard to sell. That rifle does not strike my fancy. Modern style stock on a classic action,  engraving & gold overdone.

Someone else may like it a lot.
