MARBLES TANG SIGHT
May 19th, 2021 at 2:04pm
Print Post
I bought a Marbles tang sight for my Winchester Hi-Wall and found that it did not have enough elevation adj. I bought another sight stem on ebay, thinking I could just swap the stems. I just can't figure out how to do the swap. If someone knows anything about Marbles Tang sights please help me out.

Marbles has two series of tang sights. It appears that you may have mixed them. Although I do have one I have to use, I greatly dislike the new series with interchangeable stems. For one thing, there is no overlap on the adjustments. One stem goes up to 150 and the next size starts at 150. Here is the Marbles list of the "Standard" (older series) and if you scroll down to the specifications you get the height range for each sight. This may help you in your choice. If you have the new series you just loosen the set screw at the base of the tang and pull it off. If you don't have the new one doing this will release a bunch of small ball bearings! Don't do it! Hint, the end of your box should either say Standard or Improved (ha).

Thanks oneatatime. I think you are right. does not say which model it is but the taller one has a locking ring and the other does not. Mine does have the warning about small ball bearings. I think the only model of any use is the medium. I think these sights are well designed, made and compact. I think they would last three forevers. I don't know if the company is still in business or not. They still have an ad on the net but no phone #.

I am not sure what you can do to return either of the parts that you have but even if not, I would take the loss and buy an original Lyman or Marble Tang Sight as the modern Marble sights have lots of slop in them in my opinion.  The old model Marbles built back in the day are far superior as is the old original Lyman.  I like the Lyman in that I have a dozen or so screw in apertures but my first hunting rifle sported a Marble receiver sight so I have a few with that thread.  I like the way the Marble springs up as well.  If you want to spend a little more, MVA makes a superb replica of the Marble tang sight and I am about to buy one for a C Sharps 75.  Just my 2 cents.  Tom

Tom, thanks for your input. I agree that the older Marbles site locks up solid. The problem is, it is too short. I have older Lyman tang sites but they do not have windage adj.

I assume that this is a rifle intended to hunt with so you are not using a typical target tang sight.  Is the front sight in a dovetail?  I adjust for windage by drifting the front sight or if needs to go a lot then I shim under one side of the tang sight base and then fine tune by drifting the front sight.  Tom

I thought the New Marble's tang sight had, at least, some windage capabilities. Perhaps not?

He said that his older Lyman sights did not have windage capability. These Marbles do have quite a bit of windage.

LR, did you order the 009800 or the 009801? Should have been the 009801, which is much higher.

I tried to enter a rather long winded answer but I was told to cut it down. I do want to thank all of you for helping me. I wish I knew what you men told me before I bought any Marbles sight. I am now going to show the Marbles next to a Lyman tang sight for the Winchester. The sight on the right is one I made from a Martini Cadet. The last picture is a Lyman sight on a Stevens 44 1/2 22LR. It is adj for windage. They are more rare that a purple diamond. I bought all the Marbles sights on cast boolits or ebay. I don't know if Marbles is selling anything or even in business. They have an ad on the net but no way to contact them that I can find. Thanks again guys.

Thank you emmett. That is some great information. I tried calling Marbles but got but never got an answer. Right now I have two other irons in the fire. I get back into the problem when they are finished.
