#4 roller front sight location

Gents,

Does anyone happen to know the nominal factory dimension for the location of the front sight dovetail on a #4 roller? I need to machine a new dovetail on a shortened barrel and would like it to at least appear correct.  Internet and library searches have been unsuccessful.

Thanks,

Hayface

Mine measures .645 from the muzzle to the front of the sight.

I have one measuring about .570 muzzle to front edge or about .740 to an eyeballed center of the dovetail.

Gents,

Thanks for going out of your way to get those measurements.  Based on those dimensions, plus one from a friend of mine and an old barrel that I found to measure at a local antique shop, it looks like Remington didn't have a set figure.

So far, measurements from muzzle to sight centerline range from .699" to .895".  With that wide tolerance, I might as well cut it with a hatchet.

Well, the #4 was only considered an upper-level boy's rifle after all.

Maybe the placement changed with changes to the rifle?  Solid frame, takedown,
early or late takedown, round barrel, octagon barrel, caliber?  Lots of variations.
Mine is a late takedown with knurled thumbscrew and a round barrel in.22RF.
About .815 from muzzle to center of dovetail.

Joe

#4’s were made from 1890-1933, so in 43 years there could be lots of variations. I would measure one closer to when your rifle might have been made.

Gotta point there.  The .32 that I measured is a solid frame, which makes it early in the production run.

Mine is 32 lever take down and .350 to the center of the dovetail. It doesn't look to have been shortened; the muzzle face is just as rusty as the rest of the octagon barrel; but, it's 23&3/4" long, so maybe it has been.

Well, since the barrel had already been shortened, over polished, and just generally messed with, I pulled a number out of the hat and went with it.  Actually, the final location was based on where I thought the sight looked right.  Sort of a three bears deal at not too long, not too short, but just right at .750".  I'm quite confident, I did not destroy any "collectibility" of this octagon barreled, lever takedown model that had accidentally been left after previous gunsmith took every part of this rifle for a marathon ride on his buffing wheel.  Some people just should not be allowed to have guns and tools in the same place at any given moment.

On to the next challenge.

Thanks to all for your help,

Hayface

I did a perfect cut once, down to the Thou.  You know, maybe not so perfect, on the bottom of the barrel.  Live and learn Sad. David

We've all done it if we've lived long enough.  You are brave to admit it.
