I have a Unertl scope with a ding in the rim of the eye piece. Anyone have a suggestion on how to tap it out? Or where to send it fore repair or parts? Thanks, Richard.

  Is it causing a problem?

I would not remove the eye piece to try and fix it or you might also loose your crosshairs. The cell they are attached to is right behind it and they are very easily broken.

My suggestion would be to live with it if you can manage without the use of the rear end cap. As stated above, "the cure is worse than the cold".

Could you please post a picture of the ding you are talking about. You might be able to do it yourself and maybe not depending on what we see.

The eyepiece will unscrew exposing the cross-hair carrier, but with a bit of care, there will be no problem working on the eyepiece ding if you decide to do it.  What I used to do with camera lens dings is place the piece in a v-notch cut in a piece of wood and carefully pound it out with a wood dowel.  Camera lens rings were soft aluminum, so it might be harder with a scope eyepiece.

Usually the crosshair cell sits back from the lead edge far enough it should not be damaged with out sticking something in the tube. I would be more worried about chipping the lens when trying to reshape the eye piece. If it’s just looks and not function I would live with it and watch for a new eye piece.

Heres how i fixed mine. I removed the eyepiece from the scope. I took a piece of hard work and cut a bout a third of a round in the side with an end mill then i set it in a vice i put the eyepiece in the dished out piece and GENTLY tapped with a brass drift until the small flat was out. I managed to get it out well enough that the cap would screw on again.

I was also curious if it might also affecting the screw on lens cover threads. If so that would present yet another issue in need of repair. But this all just a guess without seeing a picture of the extent of the damage itself. Hard to give sound advise on how to possibly fix the problem without being able to see it first.

Thanks to everyone who has offered suggestions. I wish I knew how to post pictures. I have looked on the ASSRA web sight, and don't find anything about pictures. bnice, it is just cosmetic so I may leave it alone, or not. A friend was once trying to change the rear adjustable base from one Unertl to another. He had to remove the eye piece to get the base off and dropped a screw down the tube, wiping out the crosshairs. I need a lock ring also, so I may ask on here for help. 40_rod, I may give your suggestion a try, with a hole through a block of wood. Was the end of your drift punch flat or rounded? Would a soft wood dowell work? And yes, it does prevent a lens cap to screw on. Thanks to all. Richard.
