How about using a multimeter and thermocouple and MEASURING the temperature?

Dave, Don't know much about the chemistry of nitre bluing.
Have had pretty good luck with nitre fertilizer (16% nitrogen) from the garden shop.
Melts at 300-400°F. Nitre blue at about 600°F (lead thermometer).
Springs at about 700°F. Want them to bend before they break.
Nitre blue is nasty, dangerous stuff, be careful.

Chuckster, do you have a brand name? Is it at tractor supply or Ace hardware? I've wanted to try this. Sorry for the hijack.

Don't remember the brand. Bought it at a garden shop several years ago. About a five pound bag.

Ive been using Potassium Nitrate Stump killer That I got from a garden store. No brand name Just a paper bag with a pound in it. It has given me a beautiful blue-Black finish.
