Anyone here know where I can obtain drawings of a Maynard breech loading cartridge carbine? I would love to build one but so far, all I have is pictures.

A friend of mine built a First Model from scratch but it is different in several ways. He may have sketches.

Thank you Deadeye Bly, that would be helpful. I have built from pictures and some specification's before  and I'm not too concerned about it being a precise copy. If anyone here has a Maynard, some dimension's, especially of the receiver would be nice.

Packet,
My understanding is that all the actions used to make the Maynard rifles were cast at the same time and were then modified to make the various models. DB may be able to confirm or shed further light on this point.
If the preceding is true, then I may be of some help. I've made a Maynard, model 1873, from bar stock and have the action dimensions, in a variety of formats, mainly dxf files.
I do know that there are some differences between the percussion models and the later models 1873 and 1882, with their riveted on top caps but suspect that the action outline and hole locations, might be the same.
I've found that copying an original example is considerably easier than trying to reinvent the wheel.

Thank you chipmaker! Info on the action you have will work splendidly. As I mentioned before, it doesn't have to be a precise copy, I'm just trying to make a nice compact shooter. Anything you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

The 1st models were different in several ways but the basic size and shape of the receiver was the same. All the 1873 and 1882 models were made from percussion receivers, some left over from war production and many from repurchased surplus carbines. If chipmaker will share his drawings that is the way to go.

Just using modern steel will not greatly increase the strength of the action. There are other design limitations.

Deadeye, thanks for that information. I did summarize that the action would only be suitable for a low pressure cartridge. I'm thinking of using the .38 special. The Maynard reminds me of a Rook rifle, a design I've always wanted to build but could never find any drawings or have one in my hand.

Chipmaker, would it be possible for me to get a copy of your files for the Maynard?

Packet and Gg,
I tried to attach a dxf file showing the action outline and hole positions but that file type isn't allowed.
If you pm me your email address, I can send you the file, from which you can extract the dimensions needed to get started.
It would also help to indicate what equipment that you have available, as some other file type might be more useful.
