I have 2 South Bends lathes, a 9" and  14 1/2". What I need is the  RPMs are for both machines, both high and low speed.

Suggest you contact South Bend Lathe directly; they are usually very helpful.

Thanks guys, South Bend is now own by Grizzly. I was told that most of the spare parts are gone and they have no written material.

I will try the suggested web site.

While hardly anyone uses them today, a machinists tachometer is a very handy tool. They can be had on ebay very reasonably. It takes the guess work out of it.

You can go digital for a few dollars and know exactly what speeds your spindle turns.

I rarely pay any attention to my own speeds. I just know which one I need for a project from allot of use over time.

According to the company's own history preserved in the Wayback Machine website, by 1930 South Bend Lathe was building 47% of the engine lathes sold each year in the United States and had become the largest exclusive manufacturer of metalworking precision lathes in the world.  In 1975, South Bend Lathe became the largest employee-earned company anywhere.  At that time, the company's assets included complete production records and the plans for every model of every machine South Bend had made.  In 2009, the firm was sold to Shiraz Balolia, the owner of Grizzly and Woodstock International, and it's headquarters was moved to Bellingham, Washington.

Not surprisingly, the firm no longer offers any rebuild services and has no spare parts for tools made before 2009.  As for the company's accumulated production history, I can only hope Balolia was not so stupid as to throw it away; but I'd not be surprised if he did.  This country has lost so much!

Sad but true and its not unusual for a major manufacturer to bought out and then run into the ground and per-say for desposable uses these days. Here today gone tomorrow and probably more so for tax purposes than a lack of profits being made. Remington is the latest example of being sold and to who and for what actual purposes will it now be used for and I guess we will find out if it will now survive the change.

The Wikipedia page has more information about the transition to Grizzly ownership.  With the advent of cheap Chinese machines beginning in the 1970s, American iron became endangered.  I doubt South Bend would still be in production if Grizzly had not picked them up.

I read an interesting post by the owner of Shars tool regarding Chinese quality.  He had a conversation on that topic with a factory owner in China and was told that the buyers put the price well above quality in their request for equipment.  He said his factory could make whatever the customer wanted if they were willing to pay for it.  My brother manages some aspects of chip manufacturing with plants in China, Malaysia, and the Philippines.  He has some interesting stories about what comes out of Chinese factories with tags indicating that they are made in other countries.  In one case a handbag was sent to France with only the handle not attached so after sewing it on in France it qualified for the 'Made in France' label.

Bill, The south bend records are with Grizzly yet.  You can send a serial number, with a check, and they will send you what they have on the machine. The link in my previous post has lots of info on many of the models they manufactured.  These machines are not complicated and used parts are readily available.  I have a 13 inch 1968 manufactured model that I went completely through.  I does everything I ask it to do but if I was to do it over I would have a much heavier, more rigid and faster machine.

I use the pictured Starrett tachometer for lathe and other shop tools. Easy to use accurate and not expensive off eBay.

On the Chinese, when I retired picked up a consulting job in the “China Trade” they always built to price & US Market demands low price. I sat in meetings were major retailers pressed small appliance companies (former US makers now Chinese Importers) were REQUIRED to take 10 cents out of a coffee maker.

Answer from the Chinese factory was cheaper steel in the stainless warmer plate. Couple of cents out of the plate few pennies out of freight, that was my contribution,  rest out of importers profit margins.

You can still buy Quality US Made, used off EBay
