How to finish CPA sanded stock?
Mar 25th, 2021 at 1:36pm
Print Post
Hello,

I have not been on the forum for awhile but soon will get a CPA build on my 44 1/2 action as "sanded" so I can adjust the Pope cheek to fit me. Since I have never seen wood in the "sanded" condition I was wondering how much detail work that needs to be done and a detail on how to finish it including recommended finishes.

Thank you for your time,
Charles

Well, the first thing, as you noted, adjust it as you please. After that, find out how fine they sanded it. It should be sanded to 320-400 grit if its listed as ready to finish. They seldom are no matter what they say. Take your time finish sanding. If you don't get it right and apply stain/finish it will be obvious and at least double the work involved. I used to use Tung oil but have switched to Tru oil. Both give beautiful finishes but Tung is slow to dry and Tru oil is much faster. The first three or so coats should be thinned with mineral spirits about half&half. While the stock is still wet, sand it with 400. The wet dust will fill the grain. Do this at least 3 times, let dry and rub with 00 steel wool. Finish with straight Tru oil as many coats as you like rubbing with steel wool between dry coats.

As packet stated, make certain the wood is well sanded and smooth before you even think about a finish.
Sand with the grain.  If you cross sand the stock the scratches will be extremely noticeable when the finish hits it. I might add that you can use a sanding block to back the sandpaper to maintain a more uniform surface finish and help eliminate uneven surfaces.

When I have the wood down to the requisite smoothness (400-600 grit), I wipe the stock down with a damp cloth and either let the wood dry or accelerate the drying with a hair dryer.  The wood that has been sanded across the pores will stand up and can then be cut off with 000 steel wool.

This might need a couple applications before the wood is smooth again.  It’s called “raising the grain” of “whiskering,” and if not done, the whiskers can raise up after the finish is applied if the humidity is high or the stock gets wet.

I use Tru-Oil for finishing.  If your wood is any good for figure, don’t mess with a stain.

If you use steel wool of any #, use a tack cloth on the wood and wait 4-5 weeks if Tru-Oil has been applied.

Kidding.

Make certain the oil has really dried before using steel wool. Read about this in a book somewhere Cool

Thank you for the replies. It put a finer touch to the way I did it in the past (45 years ago).

Wish me luck,
Charles

I grew up with my Dad using steel wool then mixture of pumice and linseed oil in a polishing pad made from old T shirts for final sanding.

Recently I have switched to very fine sandpaper’s from Klingspors . Grits in small increments from 600 to 2000 key is the intermediate steps. 400 then 500 before 600.  220 to 360 then 400.  I think there are 10 grits 400 to 2000.

It’s a method I learned at the turners club. Each step very brief dust off then move on to the next grit. Final finish with Mylands  Friction polish. It’s wax based very thin rubs out nice. Mylands also sells a wood filer, again very thin. Introduce it about 400-600 grit and only if needed.  Some Walnut needs it more than others

Woodcraft supply sells Klingspor paper but they skip the intermediate grits. Best order direct. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Fast & effective, it’s furniture manufacturers standard paper.

all good advice on this topic, but suggest trip to the range with sites.

first zero sights and this might be difficult, on unsanded stocks, the wood is likely too high, sanded might be much better, but still each shooter needs to adjsut the comb height to suit themselves, then follow finishing procedures.

Another really good finish is Daly's Ship 'n Shore, which is an oil finish made for boats, so it is saltwater and weather resistant. I learned this one from master gun builder Duane Wiebe. I have used it on several rifles and it works great. My experience with it includes one rifle that spent a week hunting in the rain in Southeast Alaska with no shift in point of impact and no noticeable affects.
