Highwall Single Set Trigger

I have a Highwall with a single set trigger. When I set the trigger and fire, the hammer doesn't fall all the way and the rifle doesn't fire. It works when I don't set the trigger. What do I need to look at to adjust/fix it?

If you have a screw in the rear tang-sight mounting hole and it is run in to far it can create a problem with the SST.

Has this ever worked properly?  There needs to be a fly in the hammer that blocks the 1/2 cock notch.  If the fly is there check to see if it is possibly sticking.

I have personally found in the past that there was just not enough spring pressure on the back of the sear to get the hammer to go past half cock all of the time.

Wcf3840,

I’d focus on what Jrlouis suggested.  Most likely there is either no fly in the hammer or it’s stuck.  When you fire from the unset position there is a tumbler that lifts the sear out of the full cock notch.  The hammer falls so quickly that you can’t release the trigger fast enough to catch the half cock notch and stop the hammers fall.  In the set mode, the tumbler flies up and knocks the sear out of engagement, but just barely.  The sear slides down the rear of hammer toward a he half cock notch but the fly prevents it from engaging.  Good luck.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. Took the rifle apart this morning. Lubricated the fly. Noticed that the sear was really stiff to move. Took about a half turn off the sear spring screw and put it all back together and she worked. You guys pointed me in the right direction. Thanks.

Best to use lighter fluid / Naphtha as both a cleaner and a lubricant as it won't attract unwanted fouling or other types of debris.

I have found that brake cleaner works well, as it is a high pressure product, and reaches hard to reach areas. I then use a lubricant that dries and does not attract dust etc. such as LPS1 or the Starrett equivalent. As John mentioned, lighter fluid does work as well. I use the above as I always have an abundance at hand. I have found LPS1 to be the best lube for firearms. I have used it for four decades with no problems associated with it's use, to include most if not all stock finishes. I must mention, that I am not their rep.
